Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Third album from The Mary Onettes, first time working with Producer Dan Lissvik (Studio, Young Galaxy and The Embassy). The album is strongly influenced by the hidden treasures from the 80s and first single Evil Coast made them no.1 most blogged artist on Hypem.com

Review

True to its name, the song sounds dark but buoyant, riding an easy bounce that sounds almost balearic despite the apparent and luxurious malaise that consumes the tune --Pitchfork

Their music is truly beautiful and affecting --Stereogum

Philip Ekström's vocals have never failed to beautifully whisk you along in every song he has ever sung for the band. And in this new single he does it all again --Prefix Mag

This record has everything I loved about the '80s... in 2013! It's so retro it's fresh again.

I bought this record the day I found out it existed. I've been waiting for new material from these guys since their debut EP. My wife and I fell in love with their sound and specifically the song "Slow" (find.listen.enjoy.) This new LP definitely shows the band's commitment to their craft. Their sound has evolved in the best possible way since their early days, blending together all the best elements of the late-80's pop/new-wave landscape. Hit The Waves could easily have been #1 on charts from 30 years ago, yet the Mary Onettes just raised the bar for today's indie rock scene.

this album is amazing. i have been listening to the mary onettes since they released their first ep. as the years go on you can hear the song writing mature and progress- yet still staying in the same realm, never losing the original feeling. sometimes people are too quick to label the mary onettes genre. ive heard everything from dream pop to synth rock, but they are genreless and focus more on raw emotion and you can name it whatever you like. if you like this album, i highly suggest purchasing their entire discography. every album they have written (including hit the waves) has its highs, its lows, its uptempo and its downtempo songs- making it amazing from start to finish. dont neglect the mary onettes lyrics. dont be afraid to google search for your favorite songs lyrics and read along while listening. its creative, heartfelt, poetic and relate-able. buy this album! rate it *****!

As a Mary-Onettes fan since I first heard them on a Labrodor sampler, I couldn't wait for this album to be released - and while not totally disappointed, I was hoping for a different 'evolution'... Their first album was simply brilliant and argueably flawless - a heavy eighties influence with up and down tempo numbers, great guitar interplay, classic analog flavored synth textures, and wonderful arrangements - I was hooked. The follow up album brought everything down to a slower pace, but still maintained a great level of energy and interesting arrangements... sadly, this new album comes off as sleepy and in some ways uninspired. Much of what captivated me about their sound seems to have faded into a more 'easy listening' 80's sound... nothing up-tempo... no real 'hooks' that suck you in and have you repeating a song over and over... While certainly a decent album to toss on while taking it easy after work if it's on top of the stack, it doesn't quite have to pull to leave it in the player, or put much effort into looking for it on a whim....

Why can't the rest of the world put out music like this. I'm 47 yrs old and after the 80'S came to a close other than a song here and there i thought there was no hope for music anymore. This group (The Mary Onettes) has given me hope! I really like the tracks #2,#3,#4,#8. For the past couple of decades people have been bashing the use of Keyboards in music which i can't understand why. It's an instrument in it's own right like any other one. Keyboards compliment beautiful sounds and mellodies and add a whole other demention to music. That's why to me personally music in the past two decades without Keyboards is dry and depressing. If you like (The Mary Onettes) and the 80'S sound please do yourself a huge favor and listen to the new album by (Shout Out Louds) titled (Optica). It is fantastic!!!

I'm smart enough to realize that there really isn't an original idea here, but I have what some might refer to as a sick loyalty to almost anything that buries itself in 80s new wave/jangle pop nostalgia, which is why I propped up last year's Wild Nothing record so high. This has everything that scratches me where I itch: icey textures, jangly guitars, chime-y keys, melodically earnest vocals without being too melodramatic (yes, the singer gives a nod or two to Robert Smith). More importantly though, the tunes are there. They definitely lost themselves in their influences, but their knack for infectious hooks helps them transcend any regressive tendencies they might have.
