This review is from: Hitachi 725405 3/8-Inch Keyless Conversion Chuck for 1/4-Inch Hex Impact Drivers (Tools & Home Improvement)
I didn't really want to pay twice the price of the Milwaukee chuck, just for keyless operation, but what is the point of using a 1/4" quick change system if you're going to put extra steps and pieces in the mix? In the end, I didn't want to try to keep track of the chuck key and didn't want to lose the speed and convenience of having a keyless drill chuck that was quick change. I've tried some of those 1/4" quick change drill bits and they're just not up to the task. I like using my regular drills and if you need a long shank drill, like I've been using a 6" long 1/8" this week, you're stuck with fussing with a drill too.
I've used the Hitachi chuck several times now, with several different drill bits. It's worked fine. It locks up nicely and I've yet to have a drill spin, but I'm not really doing much to stress that point. The long drill would stress it the most, of the drills that I've used, but it has worked fine. EDIT: 11/12/2009 - I finally encountered a problem with spinning on a 1/16" smooth shank drill bit that I was using to drill holes in an aluminum door with a high torque, high speed driver. I was drilling several holes and through a couple of layers and the chuck would spin on the bit on breakthrough. I really had to crank on the chuck to get it to work on the last couple of holes without spinning. I've used it on several other applications since my initial review, without problems. I'm still happy that I got the chuck. In the end, the Hitachi chuck seems like a quality chuck, probably worth 5 stars. But, I gave it 4 stars because of the price. Most, if not all, battery powered screwdrivers don't have the power to really stress a chuck like this and that's probably going to comprise the majority of the people who buy this unit. There are a lot of cheap 3/8" drills out there, including a Hitachi keyless chuck, corded unit that sells for about $5 more than this conversion chuck. So, I'm not convinced of the value here. But, I'm much happier now, using this chuck for drilling pilot holes for the screws I'm driving, than I was fussing with carrying a drill up the ladder in addition to carrying my bit driver. So, I'm keeping the chuck and will use it a lot to get my money's worth out of it.

This is a quality piece. Looks to be made in Germany by Rohm. It's very handy for use with those 1/4 inch impact drivers. Just say "NO" to the other made in CHINA units.

It may look stupid hanging off the end of an impact driver, but not having to buy quick change drill bits (which always break) and not having to bring a big heavy cordless or (GF) corded drill to a small job is really nice. It's a little pricey and should come with any quick change hex driver (read Festool) already, but if you're switching to LIon 10.8V drivers (which you should the next time your NiCads die) you need this.

bought this little gem after getting tired of dealing with the poor quality DeWalt keyless chuck. At the time i spent $45 bucks for this Hitachi, and while pricey, it was worth every penny knowing that i'd be able to get the bit out when needed. it has since come down in price and i purchased two more for the impact drivers i use at home. this is a high-quality german made chuck for a reasonable price, you won't be disappointed.

Bought for use in my work where I use drills and impact drivers on a daily
basis. Interestingly noted was that I could not find this chuck in a big box store as a single item purchase or in a combo purchase. I have used it for about 3 weeks and it performs very well in a variety of tasks.

After reading the reviews about this chuck and deciding between the Makita and Milwaukee, I went ahead with this model mainly because of the Made in Germany. I love anything made in Germany and this thing oozes with quality and durability. I paired this with a Makita brushless driver for a perfect marriage. Like many here I was looking for a dedicated drill but when I read about people turning their impact drivers into useful drills with a conversion chuck, I was completely sold. I am so glad I went this route and saved me from purchasing a dedicated drill. Like many here also, my quick change hex drill bits kept breaking. Even the Makita version broke which is disappointing. This keyless chuck allows me to use all my drill bits and holds them in tightly. Removal is really simple and hassle free. Who would have known that this Hitachi part was made in Germany? Thanks to the reviewers here who pointed that out and that sold me. Love Amazon Prime 2 day shipping as well!!

This little device works great. Just, first please, read the directions on how to insert it! Do it properly and you won't be disappointed. Do it the wrong way and it will keep falling out. Quality product made in Germany -- not Chinese junk. I purchased it to be able to use my driver as a drill (Hitachi Model DB 10DL). Now I can use it for everything -- drilling or driving.

I gave this thing a severe pounding on a 1,400 inch pound impact driver, worked perfectly.
Build quality is awesome. Don't waste money on drills, get a impact driver and spin a chuck.

This is a must have for anyone with a cordless driver. It is so much cheaper than a cordless drill and stores in the same case as the driver. The hex drill bits that come in most kits break too easily and are hard to find. With this adapter all you require is normal drill bits.
