I have the Hitachi PR12 Planer, it's a wonderful machine. The one big problem are the steel blades. I surfaced "new" pine boards,(about 200'), and the blades already have several nicks. So much so that I have to power-sand the ridges off the boards after they've been through the planer. I'm on my third set of steel blades. At $100 a set you are approaching the cost of a new low-end planer. I've searched for carbide blades to no avail. If they,(Hitachi),don't start making carbide blades available they might as well stop making the machine. Thank you.

I own a Hitachi F1000A planer that has not been in production for quite some time now and was having trouble finding blades to replace my original ones. After looking into other sites and getting prices ranging from $140 to $190 a set I came across Amazon and with the info provided I could use the same blades used on the P12RA planer for under $85.00 with free shipping. Thank You Amazon

Given a set of carbides are over [$$$] you can assume these are steel. The steel is useful for certain applications like recycling wood where you dont want a nail to shatter your carbides. Sharpening steel is about [$$]a pop, so you do the math for your needs. Given I do a lot of recyling of softwoods, the steel works fine. I rotate two sets. If you want carbide the Hitachi part number is 200001. Call a local dealer.

I am very glad I bought carbide blades when I bought this unit, since they seem impossible to find now. I have had a notify request in to Amazon/ToolCrib for over a year, never got any information, and they long ago seem to have removed the carbide blade item from the site. This unit NEEDS carbide blades for the planer. Without them, the unit is relatively useless on anything harder than fresh yellow pine. Old wood, ash, oak and the like require carbide or this machine simply folds the edge of the steel knives. while they can be resharpened, they are relatively useless compared to carbide blades. The planer is great, the steel blades are a waste of time.

These are good quality blades. They arrived on time and this was the best price I was able to find at the time.

I have had these blades for years and they have worked great for both hard and soft woods. The blades are easy to resharpen, and can be removed and reinstalled with little hassle. I have been very pleased with the HSS, though I have never tried carbide in this planer.

For those of you who want carbide blades, I have seen them come up on eBay on occasion (new in box) for about $400-500. If you save a search for "Hitachi P12RA blades" and have it email you when it finds something, you will probably find some carbide blades within 6 months.
