Customer Reviews

Don't bother with anything else, this is the one and only chainsaw you will ever need.
Robert A Byer
Unfortunately when I removed the cover the chain brake triggered and would not allow me to reinstall the cover.
Faith Gaertner
It handles great, very low vibration and has a lot of power and is pretty lightweight for the size.

I bought this chainsaw recently from Amazon's daily deals site, woot. I obviously have no input on long term reliability, though this is a Tanaka chainsaw under the skin and the Tanakas I grew up with were grand quality and seemed to last pretty much indefinitely if you kept the premix oily and cleaned the cooling fins. (grew up on 150 acres of woodland in a big 'old house heated primarily by wood. You could say I have a passing familiarity with chainsaws and axes _shudder_ )

It started for me on the 2nd pull from brand new, the cylinder decompressor works a treat. It restarts from hot just fine (a common problem) It cut cleanly and easily. It's reasonably fast, even with the low-kickback safety chain it comes with (great for beginners but disguises the true performance of the power head, this saw is capable of much faster work with the right chain if you know what you're doing) the muffler is good, the exhaust note isn't half as nasty as most saws I've used. The chain oiler didn't over-oil and it is adjustable (lovely feature!) Nicely vibration-isolated handles, though it has a funny kinda thunk when you move it certain ways, this seems to be down to a cool sort of rubber bumper-with-a-pin-in-it mechanism they have used that allows them to use much softer springs in the handle suspension. Technology has moved on since I was a kid I guess. Works very well though, pretty much no wrist-killer vibration.

First off, this is my first time purchasing the Hitachi brand for a saw. I was reluctant at first but took into consideration the reviews I had read about and decided to go for it. I received the saw today put on the bar and chain and it was pretty simple, a little different than my stihl and echo, but overall simple. Primed, choked and pulled it a couple times and fired up on the fourth pull. I ran the saw pretty hard for several hours cutting down a massive tree and I must say this saw is a beast! It handles great, very low vibration and has a lot of power and is pretty lightweight for the size. I had no trouble at all taking this tree down. It cut through the tree like butter. Really! It came standard with the 20" bar and chain and of course is able to change to an 18" or 16" in which i'm going to have handy. I recommend this saw to anyone needing a great saw with a lot of power. And another pro about this saw is it has a 7 year warranty. Nice!
Thanks amazon for a great purchase and a heck of a deal!

The first one came with a messed up auto brake - Amazon quickly shipped a replacement. Pretty efficient deal. Hitachi makes good tools. Just wish I did not have to sharpen the blade everytime... if you can make a perpetually sharp chainsaw blade, Email me, I will buy it if the price is right!

I paid $220 for this on Woot, retail was $400. The chain brake is of a very poor design. It engine started fine but the chain would simply not turn because the brake was stuck on and wouldn't release, regardless of how I fiddled with it. I finally solved the problem by removing the brake band altogether. And that wasn't easy because the plate that holds the band is screwed in and each screw is held with a locktite compound. I considered drilling out the screws but in the end I simply drilled out the brake band itself on each end, drilling right through the steel of the band, leaving the plate intact. Now, with a brake-free chain, the saw starts and cuts like a dream. It's a perfect saw.*

*Removing the brake is not recommended by Hitachi or by OSHA.

It starts, as stated, by the second pull--this was big for me! It is light for a 20" saw and yet with plenty of power! There is hardly any vibration even with the increased power; however, it takes some getting used to. The chain does not dull as quickly! It does not, in any way, struggle with the cut--the saw cuts through tree-trunks very fast! I have 7 chain saws--but none that perform like this saw. I did take a step up with this commercial-type saw--well worth the price!!! The grand-kids told me to stop telling them how much I love this chain saw.
