Hitachi DH38MS 8.4-Amp SDS Max Rotary Hammer with Side Handle and Case

From the Manufacturer

The Hitachi DH38MS 8.4-Amp SDS Max Rotary Hammer is the second tool in a line of next generation Hitachi hammers. A simple turn of the knob changes the mode from hammer drilling to hammer only, allowing the DH38MS to take on a variety of tasks including drilling holes in concrete for anchors or rebar, demolishing and chiseling concrete, cutting, digging, tamping or driving ground rods. The 8.4-amp, 950-watt motor produces 6.6-feet per pound of impact energy and delivers fast drilling and chiseling with a no-load speed of 510-RPM. The sealed grease system ensures high motor durability and minimal maintenance. A 360-degree side handle provides additional control, while the safety clutch shuts down rotation in the event of a bound bit. The DH38MS also includes a large carrying case with ample room for storage of bits and a side handle. The Hitachi DH38MS 8.4-Amp SDS Max Rotary Hammer comes with a 1-year limited warranty. Hitachi Power Tools provides professional-grade power tools for a variety of applications, including woodwork, metalwork, concrete, drilling, cutting and fastening. Since its inception, Hitachi has pioneered innovative technologies that have improved the quality of craftsmanship worldwide. Hitachi is a leader in power tool research and development and has achieved many firsts in the power tool industry. I put it right to work boring 1 1/2" holes through over 12" of concrete. It worked fine. It is a little lighter than most rotary hammer drills, which you begin to appreciate quickly when using it all day.

I have owned the larger Hitachi H60 MB demolition hammer for nearly a year. It has triple the hammer power of my new DH38MS rotary hammer. That is the only downside. This is the little hammer that could. It does not have a speed adjustment but the hammer rate is fully manageable. I used my SDS-MAX clay spade attachment for the first outing with the new demo hammer. The DH38 dug down through some hardpack clay with ease. It seemed funny to hear the higher hammer rate but there was no denying the spade was sinking into the hardpack nearly as fast as the heavier hammer. The real joy was when I pulled the hammer out of the hole and I didn't feel like my arm was being pulled out of my shoulder. At roughly half the weight of the larger hammer it makes the DH38 my go-to demolition hammer.

The rotary switch allows a quick change from drill/hammer to hammer. The central lock position of the switch allows you to quickly re-orient a hammer attachment. Vastly superior to the older hammers.

All-in-all this was a long overdue purchase. Do not be fooled by the low price when comparing to other light weight rotary hammers. This is a solid tool that will do the job for those lighter hammer projects and just about any size core bit you want to chuck up.

The H60 MB is officially retired for use with larger projects like breaking out a lot of concrete or asphalt. The new star of the tool box is the Hitachi DH38MS.

Price was great and so was the shipping to Hawaii. I have had a Bosch sds max for 8 years with no complaints. This Hitachi is lighter, controls simple to use , and had enough power to use chipper , shovel blade for clay soil and drove a ground rod with no problem. I have yet to try the rotary hammer function.

The Hitachi 38DHYE2, made in China is the new version of 38DHYE. We own (6) of the 38DHYE which have lasted over 5 years but the (2) 38DHYE2 "New Version" quit after 3-4 months. Took them into the repair shop and the service tech said we are wasting our money to repair these, just using them for 5-6 months maybe and throw them away. Take a look at the parts PDF and compare the new and old version and you will see lack of bearings in the newer models. The old 38DHYE were made in Japen with quality parts.

A robust hammer drill with plenty of power. The only thing I wished it had was an option for plain drilling. This hammer drill has two options, hammer or hammer drill.

I hope hitachi execs are reading this. I have had a hitachi spline drill in my termite business. Tried a Milwaukee lasted only 2 years then I bought a hitachi most reliable well built drill ever. I went to buy another one and I noticed that know it's made in China instead of Japan. The drill has less metal in it and looks cheaply built. I also owned a bosch and it didn't last very long at all. The hammer part quit working and we hardly used it. I just ordered a Mikita, has 12 amps instead of hitachi 8.5 and I think it's still made in Japan. Never owned a dewalt, stay away from the China ones, pay extra and try a makita. Its common knowledge that make it cheaper and we will sell more of them. Really dissapionted in hitachis new China made spline drill. A authorized service center for bosch said they can fix it for 250-400. Crap I can buy a new one for 380. Good luck

I own a pest control company and these drills are work horses. I have bought more expensive drills that are much heavier. My employees like this one. Only downside, is they do not have a ground plug on them. We use a ground fault box when drilling inside homes, and this drill will not work with our box, as it does not have 3 prongs on it. But we keep another drill around for those jobs.

I bought mine about a year ago, it has done everything that I've asked it to do. I drilled through cement block, removed tough old glued down vinyl flooring from a basement floor, and chipped a trench into the same floor to replace an old drain. I have no regrets on this purchase.
