5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent consumer drill.
Folks, this is not a professional user drill it is a high end consumer drill. As such, it is top notch. For my professional work I use Dewalt, Milwaukee or Bosch.

I've used the Hitachi to drive #12 three inch woodscrews with no problem. I also drilled pilot holes which takes a lot of the workload off the drill.

As a plumbing contractor, we put these cordless drill`s to the test. Because i had heard good thing`s about hitachi i purchased 3 of their cordless 14.4 drill`s(1 hammerdrill, 2 regular drill`s w/ flashlights). I received 2 good months usage on the flashlight`s before wireing problem`s came up. The hammerdrill lasted almost a year and we got 6 months out of the regular drill`s. The connectors that touch the battery leads failed on them all. They became quickly weaker as they were charged. We have found that other brand name drill`s are definitly more reliable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for production, January 23, 2004
This review is from: Hitachi DS14DVF2 14.4 Cordless Drill Kit With Flashlight (Tools & Home Improvement)
We bought one of these in September and it is worn out in January. The brushes are not replaceable, the battery contacts are bent, and the chuck is loose and wobbly. Unfortunately, we bought 3 more in December. For production, it would be one star. For home use, maybe 3 or 4 stars. It depends on how hard you use it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good drill for home use. Needs more power., April 14, 2004

Hitachi 14.4v drill kit is a good buy. The light is excellent, but not the reason I purchased the drill.

The drill itself has a nice feel in my hands... good balance. It's a good drill for home use, but could use extra power. Battery life is average. I've used the drill with the Kreg Pocket Hole Kit (which is outstanding), and the drill seems to run a little slower then it should when drilling the pocket holes.

If I were to need a drill for production, I would be inclined to look for a drill more high-end, like the Panasonic line for example. Having said this, I give it three stars. It's a good (average) tool.

I recommend Hitachi drop the light and upgrade the drill.

I've used the Hitachi to drive #12 three inch woodscrews with no problem. I also drilled pilot holes which takes a lot of the workload off the drill.

Last week, I used this drill to drive over 300 woodscrews and drill 200+ pilot holes with no problems. The run time on the battery is mid-range, but again, it's not designed to be run all day.

For home and shop use, it's great.

Nice solid chuck, good clutch, enough power for deck screws, drywall screws, etc. If you're used to a 12V drill you'll notice and appreciate the extra power. Very comfortable grip and nice balance. Charging time could be quicker - it takes over an hour to charge a battery (it comes with two). Now, I wouldn't go dropping this drill off the roof or anything like that, but I give it 5 stars because at its modest cost it's worth every penny and then some. Even the flashlight, while it's cheaply made, unlike a lot of "freebies" it turns out to be pretty useful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hello!! Its a consumer drill!, March 21, 2005
This review is from: Hitachi DS14DVF2 14.4 Cordless Drill Kit With Flashlight (Tools & Home Improvement)
People are amazing. This drill is not made for hard core pro use!Its a good home and small shop drill. What do you expect for 90 bucks.Go spend pro money for a pro drill, and thats what you'll get. This drill will do anything a home owner needs or a weekend wood worker.I've never driven a #12 3 inch deck screw into a bookcase and don't know why I would. Its a good tool for the money.

It's a well-designed drill that fits well in your hand and feels very balanced. It's weight is just right, and the quality is very high. However, it needs more power when drilling into stud. I'd recommend that you go for the 18v instead. As for the flashlight, it's a piece of junk and the lightbulb burnt out after two months. Instead of buying the exorbitant replacement bulbs, ditch the flashlight and buy a 4-LED model that needs no replacement of bulbs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get what you pay for?, April 15, 2004

This drill gets 5 stars for its value. How can people complain when it costs $89? Go buy a Craftsman or B&D for the same price or even more, I know this is much better. You get what you pay for. I bet these complainers also expect their Ford or Chevy to be just like a Mercedes for half the cost??? If you are a contractor like myself don't buy a $89 drill and then complain about it. This is excellent for my retired father and more than he will ever need.

2.0 out of 5 stars Professional carpenter, April 12, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Hitachi DS14DVF2 14.4 Cordless Drill Kit With Flashlight (Tools & Home Improvement)
I am a professional millwork installer and needed a second drill on the job. I saw this drill at a local store and thought I would buy it for the low price of $89.00 just to have it. What a mistake! After three months I decided to give it to a new carpenter as a "starter" drill. If you are a homeowner who uses a drill once a week maybe this is a good drill. All other professionals, I wouldnt even spend the money to have it in your gangbox as a reserve.
