Brought two of these form Amazon a couple of weeks back. They are as advertised and arrived well packed. I have not had any problems so far.

I am running one drive internally and the other in an open external enclosure as a backup device. The drives are very quiet and don't get very hot (just ran a disk benchmark and the temp went up to 33ºC). CPU usage during the test was 7.2% on my E6750 system.

Performance on HDTune shows transfer rate avg of 108.2 MB/sec (131-65MB/sec). Burst rate was measured at 207MB/sec.

Access time at 14.1ms seems a bit slow but then this is a 1 TB drive. I can't find anywhere that Hitachi is quoting access times on this drive, so I have no scale to know if this number is good for this drive or not.

I will give it 4 stars instead of 5 because of the possibly slow access time.

In the past i've been referring Hitachi DeskStar as the deathstars due to high failure rates. I have been purchasing these drives for work due attractive pricing and very surprised to see no failure rates over the last 14 months. This purchase was for personal use and would be the 4th drive (over 30 drives are being used at work). Nice improvement from Hitachi.

I bought this drive because of long term dependable service from a previously purchased 320GB Hitachi drive. Some better known brands have not always lasted as well although warranty was always honored. This drive came well and securely packed and went into use immediately in an external enclosure for very important back up.

Beware "Made in China" and like every other Chinese Hard drive (and other products) I have bought over the years they NEVER last. Sure there is a 3 year warranty but you have to ship it off at your own expense and settle for a refurbed replacement. It was a fast, quiet drive while it lasted...

This is my third dead Hitachi drive and I will go back to Western Digital Black series drives or Seagates that are made in Thailand only. Chinese drives are not worth the data loss or hassles. I am the IT guy for a small company and build computers on the side for friends so Buyer Beware! Frankly I expected much more quality standards from a global brand like Hitachi. Disappointing.

If we weren't running XP based systems at work I'd be using Kingston SSD's...

Installed one of these in a NAS last March to replace a failing Seagate. It seems many of the early 1TB drives, including the Seagate 7200.12 series and WD Caviar Blacks, had extremely high failure rates after only a few months. I ended up going with the Hitachi as it was one of only a few other drives listed as supported by the NAS and seemed to have slightly better reviews. The Hitachi drive is much quieter than the Seagate, and seems to run a little cooler as well. I also purchased a Samsung F3 drive around the same time to use as a backup, and while that one is a little noisier than the Hitachi, it seems to be slightly faster as well. Both the Hitachi and the Samsung are still working fine more than 6 months after being installed, which is more than I can say for the similar drives from other manufacturers.

I replaced a bad disk drive for a friend. They do not use their computer very often. After 45 days, the new disk was behaving a bad S.M.A.R.T. status and to replace drive. I am starting that process. I am not happy to have to restore another system image though for yet another disk drive.

The hard drive was dead on arrival. As I've had issues with Hitachi drives dying quickly in the past, I was honestly not surprised. It was the cheapest option at the time, but I will not make that mistake again. Just avoid Hitachi. It's currently listed at 159.99 - I would not gamble with one of these drives at that price.

On the bright side, Amazon's RMA is fantastic.

Works fine. No issues so far. I connected this as secondary drive in my desktop to keep second copy of all my documents. I read reviews in Amazon and some other places. Deskstar drives failed and I thought of take risk for the price I paid. I was using Toshiba portable Hard Drive (80 GB) from last 6 years and never had any problem.
