The two-speed transmission is operated by a one-touch speed shift knob, which allows complete usage of the speed range from 0 to 280 / 840 rpm. In addition, the drill has an electric brake that allows the user to stop rotation immediately when the trigger switch is released. I purchased this drill to supplement my larger Makita model. I'm an amateur woodworker with a passion for power tools. After much research, reading and deliberation, I chose this Hitachi over several other brands. This just seemed like too good of a deal to pass up and I was right.Popular WoodWorking magazine raved about these inexpensive Hitachi drills and now I know why. I've had the tool for 3 weeks and used it for several projects and I'm not dissapointed. It has much more power than you might expect, given it's small footprint and light weight. It fits into my hand like a good tool should and it's fun to use. This drill replaced an older 9.6 DeWalt which I didn't really care for. All in all, considering the price, power, quality manufacturing and the great flashlight, this purchase was a great value. I love it when I feel like I got a lot for my money.
