Solid, Great Value, Powerful Performance!,
By Flynn Farralone (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hitachi G12SR3 4-1/2-Inch Angle Grinder (Tools & Home Improvement)
I was installing a new sink in the kitchen and had to enlarge the opening to accomodate it, which meant cutting through granite tile. After much research, it seemed the best way to do it was to use an angle grinder fitted with a diamond blade. I didn't want to make a big investment so I found the Porter-Cable model at Lowe's for $39.99 and was all set to buy it, but this model was right next to it for only $5 more -- plus it came with a case and 5 grinding disks. I'd read that the Hitachi was a solid tool so I went for it. I sure am glad I did -- it is incredible! So small but with so much power, and is very solidly built. Changing the disk was simple. I was very pleased. For general use, it's more than sufficient for most DIY'ers.I am puzzled why the Hitachi's handle is angled slightly inward -- all the other grinders have their handles at a 90-degree angle from the body. It didn't affect performance, but I don't see the rationale. At any rate, it's totally worth it. With the diamond blade, it made a 1" deep, 36" long cut through GRANITE in about 4 minutes (including brief rests) -- I was amazed. I used a Hitachi diamond blade for dry cutting -- it was incredible!

Bang for the Buck,

I bought this about a year ago and every time I use it I like it more. This tool feels solid, powerful, and comfortable to hold. I particularly like the fact that I can move the handle to either the right or left side depending on what I'm cutting and where I want to hold. The carying case is great too and keeps everything, including wheels, in one handy place. Drop a cut-off wheel in this and say goodbye to your Dremel. (Check out the Dewalt cut-off disks though as other brands don't have the 7/8" arbor in a 4.5" disk.) I have to admit that I'm not using this thing every day, but I would expect that for any user except a contract this should be all you need, and a at good price.

I bought this a few weeks ago when Amazon had it marked down a bit more than normal. At the time I didn't know what I would use it for but figured it would come in handy at some point.Last week I needed to take apart a chair and one of the 1/2" bolts stripped. There was no room for a hacksaw or any other tool I had. This thing cut through the bolt, while easily avoiding damaging anything else, in less than a minute. The time I saved in that one use, even compared to a hacksaw if it had worked, paid for the tool. It is solidly built, comes with a bunch of disks, has a great case, and feels "solid" when used. I'm sure it's not the best angle grinder around. If you use one frequently I'm sure there are better quality grinders available. (Hence the 4 stars). However, if you only have an occasional need or want to have one of these on hand for when you will, I don't think this will let you down.

I bought this grinder for the simple fact that skilsaws with carbon disks on them are heaver than they used to be. The spindle is uncluttered and spins true and the guard is of the collar type that from the looks can be placed 360 degrees with the use of a hex head . Note : this is the keiko plant meaning made in Hitachi's china plant , i would have bought it regardless but if it were inline with my trade i would want this sort of information. Heavy solid simple ,large case with room for adds plus 5 abrasive disks .

Good Price, Good Quality Tool. The carrying case is kind of flimsy compared to a sturdy tool box, but it is more than adequate for a weekend warrior. Now that I have the tool, I find I use it more than I expected. There are things that I would have done with a dremel or sander in the past, but only because I didn't have a grinder.

i bought this angle grinder while i was searching for a cheap, yet powerful, and reliable angle grinder. it came with a carrying case and five abrasive grinding wheels. I started it up, and it was smooth, and used it to cut through some 1/4 inch steel plate, and it hardy bogged down. So far, i have used it for probably a total of an hour, under very strenuous use, and occasionally i will start it up, and there will be a loss of power, and a burning smell from it. but if I let it cool down then restart it, it works great. I hope this grinder lasts me a long time.

I use the grinder mostly with a cutoff wheel for scoring and cutting metal and the Hitachi has worked admirably. For 40 bucks I didn't expect much but it's actually a pretty good little machine

After searching and reviewing many electric angle grinders, the Hitachi is the best value for the money. I like thefact there is a case to contain the tool along with additional wheels. This product is for an occasional project, and I like the fact that this kit contains everything I needed to grind welds down. The tool performs as I had expected, and the quality is very good. All and all, a very good tool for the modest amount of expense.

A compact grinder that fits easily in my tool box. Good power to size ratio. I especially like the rubberized grip. The on/off switch is fairly simple to use once you figure it out--and it stays on, unlike my old Bosch that woud constantly flip off. The five extra grinding disks are a nice touch, too. Would buy again.
