From the Manufacturer

The Hitachi H45MRY SDS Max 9.2-Amp Demolition Hammer is the first in its class with a dedicated anti-vibration mechanism. This UVP system combines counterweights and dampers to reduce vibration by over 50-percent and increase tool life. The H45MRY has an impact energy rating of 9.4-feet per pound and power 9.2-amp motor and an impact rate of up to 3,000-BPM. Its low vibration and high performance make the DH40MRY more productive meaning you work smarter, not harder. The DH40MRY comes complete with side handle, carrying case and a 12-inch bull point. This hammer has an idle strike restrictor to prevent no-load activation and additional wear on the tool. I am putting in a 25 foot long pondless waterfall with a 4 foot grade drop. It calls for a 5' x 4' x 2' basin to catch, store and recirculate the water back to the weir at the top. It also calls for cutting "steps" in the hillside for each waterfall along the stream. What the plans don't account for is that all this digging has to take place in the most compacted, hard and rubbery clay soil imaginable.

So far, I had used a Mantis tiller, a pick ax, a tool that is heavy and is designed to cut edges or shape sides of deep holes that I can't recall the name of along with shovels and a 5 gallon bucket and a garden cart. At last count, I had removed 11 inches of depth and I was exhausted.

I started thinking about renting a jack hammer. Around here, those go for $70.00 per day. In addition to the water feature project, I also have several retaining walls and a flagstone patio along with electrical and water lines to dig and bury so $75 times 4-5 days started getting me to thinking about buying something.

I looked at everything, but I saw nothing. That is to say that nobody carries demolition hammers in stock. Maybe it's the economy and stores have to watch what they carry, especially when it comes to construction/demolition tools when nobody is building. In any case, this purchase boiled down to academic research.

After altogether too much time spent comparing apples to oranges and granny smiths to golden delicious, I decided to focus on the tasks at hand and it appeared that something in the range of 9-10 ft lbs of energy and 10-15 lbs of weight would strike a balance for what would suit my needs. That seemed to mean something in the $500 or so range.

This Hitachi hammer us a dream tool. It digs in compacted soil fast and easy. I am taking out orange tree stump and the 2" chisel works great. This unit has more hammer power than the DH40, which I also have. It is heavy with SDS Max accessories attached, but that helps and additional force not needed. Noise and vibration not excessive. Great tool at a reasonable price.

While the hammer (the tool) does get Five Stars, the carrying plastic suitcase is kinda pathetic; it was broken and had a hole in it with a loose cracked plastic, some plastic internals just tore off. Latches came off. I called Amazon and was taken care of within two minutes. THANKS, AMAZON! Shame on you, Hitachi for 'designing' a Styrofoam quality super-cheappo plastic carrying suitcase that is garbage. Frankly, a Ziplock bag would have been more acceptable to me. This hammer deserves to be carried in a Samsonite. I took one star off from Hitachi because of this. Like I said, the hammer tool itself seems first rate so it is still recommended but only from Amazon.
