Aggressive, but...,
By Ed (Clemmons, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hitachi SV13YB 2 Amp 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander with Cloth Dust Bag (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is my third random orbit sander in the last 3-4 years and it replaces a smooth operating but poorly made Porter Cable 333. The positive aspects of the Hitachi are that it is very agressive, has good power, and the dust collection seems to work fine. Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to control when the pad is flat on the sanding surface and tends to veer out of control in whatever direction the orbit takes it. In addition, the top of the sander is very large which makes it uncomfortable to hold and probably adds to the control issue. The Porter Cable clearly led the way in sanding quality and smoothness. All in all, the Hitachi just doesn't provide the blend of aggressiveness and finesse that I desire for my woodworking needs.

Good sander. Bad pad.,

UPDATED REVIEW:I'd originally posted a review complaining that the hook and loop pad went slick too fast. That much is still true. However, after some searching, I found that one of the Dewalt backing pads fits perfectly! It's the one for the DW421 and DW423 and it's the exact screw pattern of the Hitachi pad. Probably same manufacturer. Anyway, problem solved as far as I'm concerned (provided this one doesn't have the same problem). Beyond that, it's a reasonably priced sander with good power, good dust collection, and unlike another reviewer, I find it's easy to control. So if you don't mind expecting to upgrade your backing pad, I think this sander is worth the price. If you'd rather not, maybe spend a bit more on a Dewalt or P/C sander.

Really Good Sander,
By Jason (Murray, UT United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hitachi SV13YB 2 Amp 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander with Cloth Dust Bag (Tools & Home Improvement)
I think the sander is great. I've been doing woodwork for 15 years now and this one is great if you're looking for a dependable, smooth running sander that's not too pricey. On flat surfaces I haven't had it run off from me much at all like the others reviews said. I think the rubber portions of the top make it easy to hold onto (easier to hold than the Porter Cable) and the dust collection works great too. If I could change one thing I'd add a toggle switch for the on/off button. My old Ryobi had that and I thought it was more convenient. Other than that I love this sander.

Did They Test These?,
This review is from: Hitachi SV13YB 2 Amp 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander with Cloth Dust Bag (Tools & Home Improvement)
I was also trying to upgrade from the Porter Cable 333. I had one for years but when I purchased another Porter Cable as a replacement it died within a few weeks so I bought this Hitachi and now after a very short time in use the Velcro pad is slick and will not hold onto the sand paper. I'm not happy about having to replace the sanding pad so soon after purchase. Maybe I'll just move on to another brand....

Too Many Negatives,
This review is from: Hitachi SV13YB 2 Amp 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander with Cloth Dust Bag (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought this one to replace a $40 Ryobi model from the Home Depot, and I thought it would be an upgrade. This turns out to be not true. As another reviewer said, the orbit is truly random, and sometimes veers off of your work with no warning. It has good power, but is difficult to control. The dust bag is useless, and doesn't do nearly as good of a job at the Ryobi did. I am going to return it and hope that Makita can make a better product...

Great sander, ok dust bag.,
This review is from: Hitachi SV13YB 2 Amp 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander with Cloth Dust Bag (Tools & Home Improvement)
We used this sander to do an entire table, 2 benches, and a chair. We will also be using it for quite a few more chairs. It does a great job and even my wife has no trouble controlling it. I don't know why so many reviewers say they can't control it. To those who say they have trouble controlling this sander, I would highly recommend you stay away from more dangerous power tools. This sander is great, and I would highly recommend it. The only issue I have with it is the dust bag. It's not that I expect it to catch all of the dust, although that would be nice. The problem is that it will send dust towards your face at certain angles. Even with my safety goggles on I would occasionally get dust in my eyes. If not for this one problem I would give it 5 stars. It's a simple enough fix though, I just sand in a way that it doesn't spray in my direction. Great product, easy to use.

A Useful Role Player,
By Bigfoot (Pacific Northwest) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hitachi SV13YB 2 Amp 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander with Cloth Dust Bag (Tools & Home Improvement)
With four other sanders ahead of it, I probably wouldn't have purchased this except it came free as a promotion with my Hitachi C10FCE2 10-Inch Compound Miter Saw. That said, I was interested in the sander and do see a place for it in my power tool inventory. A couple of observations:1. This is probably not the tool I would reach for when I want to put the finishing touches on fine furniture. This model has lots of power and gets rid of material in a hurry. A certain amount of user finesse is required in using a single speed sander and if you don't have it, you can get in trouble in a hurry. An awkward on/off switch and a slightly blocky feel further complicate matters. 2. I haven't yet experienced the kind of problems some are reporting with the hook & loop pad. I've had to replace pads on competitive Bosch and Porter Cable products. Pad life can be prolonged by firmly seating sandpaper discs, periodically cleaning dust out of the pad with an airgun and letting the sander do the work without applying too much pressure. I think this model will probably wind up as my workhorse sander. I can see it functioning effectively when I have lots of stock or paint to remove from larger surfaces.

Bad hook and loop pad design,
This review is from: Hitachi SV13YB 2 Amp 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander with Cloth Dust Bag (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have replaced a DeWalt palm sander with the Hitachi SV13YB sander. I am doing remodeling on my home and am in the process of sanding the exterior (old 105 siding), getting ready for painting. My 22-year-old son has been using the first one I bought, continuously, for three days. A couple days ago, I went and bought another one in hopes of joining him and making the work go doubly fast. However, just as I was about to break out the new one and begin using it, my son came to me and told me the sanding disks would not stay on the sanding pad. I went and checked it out, and sure enough he was right. So, after only three days, I'm looking at a nonfunctional sander. He is now using the new one and I will have to find something else to do, until I can get this one repaired. The hook and loop sanding pad on this unit may be a good idea, but is either a bad design or uses inferior materials.

Nice Orbit Sander,
By GumbyTheCat "Gumby" (Ohio, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hitachi SV13YB 2 Amp 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander with Cloth Dust Bag (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is my go-to tool when I stain large objects and need to quickly do a first-sand on large, rough surfaces (like doors). (For subsequent sanding, I go the manual route). This gets the job done well, and I have not had the hook-and-loop pad go bad like some other reviewers here. I don't like the fact that the collection bag tends to fall off - there is no latch or anything, just held by friction. So periodically I check to see that the bag is still seated firmly on the exhaust outlet. The sander is easy enough to control, although as with all orbit sanders, it takes a bit of getting used to. Until you're familiar with it, it has a tendency to get away from you. But once you're comfortable with it, no problem. And this may not be important but I do appreciate the cool-looking futuristic design of the thing. Recommended.

Some basic things wrong,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hitachi SV13YB 2 Amp 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander with Cloth Dust Bag (Tools & Home Improvement)
Two basic things wrong with this sander. One, the bag keeps falling off. It is a friction fit and the constant vibration eventually causes the bag to loosen and fall off. Two, the on-off switch is badly designed. You should be able to turn the sander off with the same hand that is holding the tool. It is most difficult to do this and usually I have to reach over with my other hand to flick the switch. Seems to me, these would be easy things to fix if the people who design these tools would just use them in real situations. |
