5.0 out of 5 stars Wow Wow Wow! What else can I say?, November 20, 2010
This review is from: Hitachi UltravisionL46S603 46 1080P 120Hz LCD HDTV (Electronics)
I bought this unit at Sam's Club for $1089. Any other 55" LCD unit was going for $1500 or more at the time. The other units looked brighter and clearer then this Hitachi at first, until I noticed that the other units were hooked up to a BlueRay player via HDMI cables and the Hitachi was hooked up to a cheap DVD player with RCA cables. I demanded that one of the store associates hook this unit up to a BlueRay player and set all the 55" units to Standard video mode. Holy cow! This Hitachi blew the other units out of the water. Other shoppers were immediately drawn to it. To bad for them. It was the last one and I got it. I got home and hooked it up to my Toshiba D-VR610 DVD player with HDMI cables and stuck in The Lord of the Rings. BAM! I was knocked off my couch by the picture quality. At first, I had this strange feeling I could not put my finger. Something did not seem just right. Then it came to me. My mind was playing tricks on me. The picture was super clear and defined, but there was something else my mind was not use to seeing while watching TV. Depth! Not the distorted unrealistic 3D type of depth your see when watching the newer 3D movies. Real life depth. As if I were watching a live stage play and not a DVD. I invited some friends over to watch Prince Caspian. They own a newer 50" Plasma screen. They were blown away! They said that the movie felt so real to them that it was as if the were sitting next to the camera man watching as they filmed each scene, or as if they were not watching TV but were looking out a window and seeing this happening on their front lawn. Personally, it is going to take me a while to get use to this. Movies are suppose be an illusion that draw you away from reality and into fantasy world. Stage plays don't have that effect on me. I like stage plays, but no matter how good the actors are you are always aware when watching a stage play that the people are just acting and nothing is real. This TV is so clear and defined, with so much depth, that it has the same effect on me as a stage play would. I am sure I will get use to it after a while though. If I consider that I am only using a upscaling DVD player and not a BlueRay player, and I only have the TV video set to Standard mode, I wonder how much better it could get. Personally I don't want to know. I am already uncomfortable with how clear it is already. As far as the sound goes, all I can say is it is superb. I have a high quality Pioneer stereo system that bought in the early 90s that I run all my sound through, but I tried these speaker by them self and they were the best built in TV speaker I have ever heard. The volume is good enough most situations, but they could be louder. I am half deaf in my left ear, so it could just be me.

If you are worrying about LCD motion blur, don't. The other 55" units I looked at at Sam's that were $500 more then this unit had such bad motion blur that I could not watch them. I even pointed this out to one of the associates and asked him if the other units were set to 120 Hertz. I have yet to be able to detect any on this unit.

For $1089, I would say you would have to be an idiot to pass up this set. But get it fast, because it won't be around much longer.
