The Book "The Hitchhiker" is about two girls named Christina Jenkins and Terri Martin who are vacationing in Florida. They are on their way to Tampa and then they're going back home to Cleveland. On their way to Tampa they pick up a hitchhiker named James. He decides to go with them since he has a cousin in Tampa who owes him money. Terri doesn't like the idea but Christina thinks James is cute and she wants an adventure.
Christina is the type of girl who is carefree and calm and loves to party. Unlike Christina, Terri is very cautious and careful. She is often worried or nervous. For some reason she is afraid of James.
When they arrive in Tampa, they find James' cousin's house, and stay there for a night.
The next morning James announces that he will go with the girls to Cleveland for no apparent reason other than he doesn't like Florida. Terri thinks he is running away from something in Florida. She is upset about the decision. Christina is excited.
As they were about to leave, Paul ( James' cousin ) ran outside announcing his wallet was stolen. He blamed James because James was the only person who knew about the 1,000 dollars in his wallet. Or did somebody else know about the wallet?
Without Paul getting his wallet back, James punched him hard and drove off with the girls.
Late that night, on their way to Cleveland, Terri realizes they are being followed by another car. Who could it be? They don't know....
They decided to stay in a motel that night. The next morning Terri disappeared. Christina and James could not find her anywhere. Christina had the keys to the car so she decided she would go with James to look for Terri.
As Christina and James walked to the parking lot they realized the car was missing too! But how? Christina had the only key right in her hand. Since they couldn't find Terri or the car they decided to hitchhike out of town... But what happened to Terri? What happened to the car? What happened to the person following them?
It is all told in the ending of "The Hitchhiker". If you decided to read this book you are most likely to be shocked by the outcome.

I enjoyed the book "The Hitchhiker" very much. I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next! It was very suspenseful! It was one of those books where you keep wanting to turn the page to see what's going to happen next! The climax was very exciting!
I would recommend this book for anyone that likes mystery or horror books. I think all ages would enjoy this book, especially young readers. It was a very interesting book!

A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Hitchhiker (Hardcover)
I really enjoy this book. This book was based on teenagers and that's probably why I understood it so well. I also found it interesting because of all the twists in the story. When I read I like not to know what's going to happen, all through the book.

There are five main characters in this book. You will meet two of them at the end. They are very important, so read carefully. It's mainly about 2 kids going on a road trip and they meet a third one. Could that be the hitchhiker? You will find some of the destinations are quit odd.

I think this book is for all ages and reading levels. If they had read other R.L Stine books in the past.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Hitchhiker is about two girls who pick uo a hitchhiker., October 25, 1999

Did you ever hear someone tell you that hitchhiking is a very dangerous thing to do? Well, in the novel The Hitchhiker , written by R. L. Stine, the hitchhiker is in for a surprise. The book was well written, had lots of actoin, and was very mysterious. Christina and Terri, two high school students were in Key West partying during spring break. On there way home, they pick up James, a hitchhiker from Key West. He doesn't know that it could be a thrilling ride. Unfortunatly, they experience troubling times together and get along almost to the end of the book, but didn't know they would be separated. The characters in The Hitchhiker are very cool. They have realistic personalities. The characters are very believable. Christina is a teenager who likes to party and likes to take risks. Terri, her best friend, is very catious and doesn't like to pick up or talk to strangers. James is a hitchhiker from Key West, who has had a very bad past, and wanted to get away from Key West for a while. Teh ending is the best part because the conclusion has many twists. This book is a great book to buy if you like scary and action packed books. If you read this book, you might find some goosebumps all over.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Point Horrors..., February 23, 2000
This is probably one of the early Point Horrors that I read, and is definitely one of the best. Stine's creation of suspense and tension throughout the novel was great, and the ending was such a shock. This is classic. A definite recommendation to all fans of the horror genre....

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hitch Hiker, June 5, 2011
The Hitchhiker written by R.L. Stine is about two girls named Christina Jenkins and Terri Martin. The girls are headed to Tampa Bay, Florida. On their way, Christina and Terri pick up a hitchhiker named James. James decides to go with them because he has a cousin in Tampa named Paul that owes him money. They arrive at Paul's house to spend the night. As they head back home the next morning, Paul accuses James of stealing his wallet with 1,000 dollars in it. James punches Paul in the face then drives off with Christina and Terri. As Christina, Terri, and James are driving back to Cleveland, Terri realizes they are being followed by another car. They spend the night at a hotel that night. The next morning Terri disappears. James and Christina can not find her anywhere. James and Christina go to the car, but the car is gone. How could this be? Christina had the only key to the car in her hand, so James and Christina hitchhike out of town. What happened to Terri and the car? You will find out if you read the end of the Hitch Hiker. This book is interesting to me because it keeps my mind flowing. Each page I turned was more and more intense. R.L. Stine is a great author that appears to like to write creepy books to give you goose bumps. I know because I get goose bumps every time I read his stories. If you read this book it will send a chill up your spine. Hopefully you will read this really creepy story that is a mind blowing story.

3.0 out of 5 stars okay, nothing more, August 6, 2009
Christina and Terri pick up a hitchhiker, despite Terri's protests. As they drive through the swamps of Florida, Christina is flirting with him while Terri is wondering what's wrong with him. Why does he keep losing control over his anger? What is he hiding? Will this drive be their last?

Not too bad, but Stine can do better.

5.0 out of 5 stars A hitchhiker caught in the worst situation of his life..., May 29, 2007
A Kid's Review
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes thriller novels. This book had everything a thriller had to offer to any reader. There were many surprises in this story such as, James didn't kill the old man, but the two beautiful girls did! If someone said that this book was a true story, I would believe them because everything that happens in this book can occur in real life. I learned to never pick up hitchhikers because of this book.

A Kid's Review
I recommend this book to anyone that loves mystery or scary stories. As Christina and Terri are driving down the street Christina says, " 'Hey, look at the hitchhiker, he's cute, looks like a killer.' Terri said, 'Christina--I don't like this.' 'What could happen?' "Christina responds. Another, reason why I recommend this book, because it tells that you should never get in car with a stranger. At the beginning Terri tried to tell him it was a mistake. "That's why I was so cruel to you when we first met, I was trying to warn that you got yourself into trouble with us." In conclusion, if you like reading mystery books or a scary story for a sleepover I recommend that you read this book. It is full of suspense!!!!!
