Why did an educated, cultured people follow Adolf Hitler to the frightening depths of horror that National Socialism wrought? The author provides a clear and complete explanation of the factors that led to such an incredible nightmare.

The complex combination of a proud, defeated and vengeful nation, economic desperation, deep-seated prejudice and hatred -- fueled by charismatic leadership and oratory -- is unveiled here in a chillingly rational exposition. The escalation of Nazism, from its tentative start, gradual acceptance, and suddenly explosive confluence across the country, is illustrated both psychologically and historically to great effect.

What is this book relevant now? Mr. von Krockow has provided us with a grave warning about the danger posed by today's extremists, either left or right, religious or secular, nationalist or socialist. Let us beware of those who stoke the fires of hatred, seek to redefine right and wrong, or silence dissent by eliminating alternative points of view.
