Meticulous recounting of the booting of top brass of the Wehrmacht on the eve of war. Recounts how Himmler,Heydrich & Goering set up top generals Blomberg & Fritsch via accusations of marrying a prostitute in Blomberg's case and homosexual perversion in Fritsch's case. Both were beloved by the army and commanded their absolute loyalty but were potential obstacles to the plans of Hitler. Outmaneuvered by Hitler, they were replaced with the "team players" Hitler desired. Extensively footnoted, very detailed account, this 400+ -page book covers only a 6-month, prewar period. It is less for the casual reader (such as me, hence the 4, not 5, stars) than a real "student" of the period. There were, for example, many lesser-known personages discussed that were hard to keep track of. Not a lot of fireworks but much of it is engrossing.
