Editorial Reviews

Review

Although interest in WW II has never been lacking in Britain and the US, neither country has paid much attention to the Eastern Front during that war. Yet it was in the east that the war decidedmore than three-quarters of the losses suffered by the German army were on the Eastern Front. Therefore Mller and Ueberschrs bibliography and historiographical essays will be welcomed by serious scholars of that conflict. Organized thematically, the five sections of this work (policy and strategy, the military campaigns, the ideological nature of the war) summarize the very latest in scholarship on the real war. The authors are equally hostile to Marxist and reactionary accounts of the war, and are particularly dismissive of the theory that Hitlers attack on the USSR was a preventative strike (a theory that is periodically repeated by various right-wing historians, despite a singular lack of evidence)...this study is indispensable for Western scholars... -- CHOICE

This book will benefit any person carrying out serious research into Hitlers failure to subjugate Russia. -- Crown Imperial

This serious study is a must for all interested in the history of World War Two. -- British East-West Review

This review is from: Hitler's War in the East, 1941-1945: A Critical Assessment (Monographs in German History) (Hardcover)
This work is an incredible help in tracking down resources concerning the Russo-German War (1941-45). Not only do Muller and Ueberschar list thousands of works in English, German, and Russian, but they walk the reader through the trends of the literature in the past five decades. It is definitely not an accessible book for the layperson, but if you plan to do scholarly work in the field of WWII studies, this work is a must.
