5.0 out of 5 stars 1920 brought to life, October 27, 2002
This review is from: Hits of 1920 (Audio CD)
1920! The first year of American prohibition, the beginning of a decade long party fortified by bathtub gin, saxophones, flappers. In London police horses were replaced by cars. In Germany Hitler laid out the principles of his new Nazi party. Mahjongg and Ouija boards were popular. Everyone was singing 'Whispering', 'Swanee', and 'Alice Blue Gown.' This CD presents original recordings in the best and truest sound possible, featuring artists like Eddie Cantor, Al Jolson, Paul Whiteman, Nora Bayes, as well as mostly forgotten musicians such as Margaret Young, Ted Lewis, Ben Selvin, Billy Murray.

'Let the Rest of the World Go By' and settle back and listen.

4.0 out of 5 stars "BREAKING THE SOUND BARRIER OF YESTERYEAR!", April 8, 2003

How refreshing it is to finally be able to listen to the great
popular singers and bands of our acoustic yesteryear on a commercially-distributed CD! This wonderful collection helps breaks that barrier and hopefully future issues from Naxos, Archeophone, and other companies will reach back even further into the earliest years of the twentieth century -unveiling heretofore unheralded recorded treasures. This digitalizted update from the original 78s is nothing short of masterful, and all on a budget CD no less. It is about time that Charles Harrison, Campbell & Burr, and Billy Murray were given their day in the sun. We can only hope that this is just the first strike in the long-overdue opening of a musical goldmine!"
