Editorial Reviews

80' supergroup Mike & the Mechanics' core members are Mike Rutherford of Genesis, Paul Carrack from (Squeeze & Ace) & the late Paul Young from Sad Café. Their chart successes are here, including 'All I Need Is A Miracle', 'Living Years' & 'Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)' and more.

All the best BUT this album does not feature the original version of what is probably Mike +T Mechs greatest song.
It has a corny, overly produced, overly-reworked version of All I Need Is A Miracle.
Ok, maybe they had to re-record the song because of label disputes or something, but why make it worse and not better?
Avoid it if you want the original 1985 track!!!!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars A Rhino Rip-Off!!! October 24, 2005
Format:Audio CD
This just seems to be a reissue of M+TM's UK best-of from 1996. That means that the version of "All I Need Is A Miracle" here is not the original. When Rhino decided to re-release this, why didn't they include both? As if that wasn't bad enough, this collection doesn't even have all of the group's Top 100 US hits. Usually Rhino does a great job off nailing all the charting singles and adding extra tracks, but in this case they really dropped the ball!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Collection September 27, 2002
Format:Audio CD
Mike + the Mechanics' "Hits" does a great job living up to its name. This disc provides the listener with 64+ minutes of the band's most popular songs from their first four albums (1988-1995). The selection is excellent and includes one song not listed in amazon's track listing above (Track 14 is "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" from 1995's "Beggar On a Beach of Gold").
A few minor complaints are all that keeps this highly enjoyable collection from 5-stars. First of all, the cd booklet (if you can call it that) contains no information at all. In fact, it's solid white on the inside (I mention this so you won't be surprised and irritated like I was upon opening it for the first time). Secondly (and this is really a minor quibble), the songs are not presented in chronological order. Lastly, the price (as currently listed) is rather steep. Since there is only one song (or version of a song) included on this collection not available on the regular cd releases--"All I Need Is A Miracle '96"--and, since it's not even as good as the original version, you'd be better off collecting the individual releases starting with the debut.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reliving The Living Years September 24, 2005
Format:Audio CD
The 1980's brought a great sense of pop music, as well as the case of spinoff bands. Band English was formed from members of Journey, Bad English was featured with members of Styx, and Genesis had a spinoff as well. While they were riding high with tracks like Invisible Touch, and Illegal Alien, Mike Rutherford stepped out on his own, and made a spinoff group that was unique. Mike & The Mechanics really did hit the nail on the head in the 1980's, with Paul Carrack from Squeeze as one of the leads, the group was very strong in the 80's, and part of the early 90's too. Now after almost ten years, a collection has come to the U.S. of their hits.

Mike & The Mechanics: Hits record, is a reissuing of the 1996 overseas greatest hits album. Arguably, there is absolutely nothing new on this package for anybody who bought the collection before. Nevertheless, the package really does deliver quite well, as it portraits the spinoff band so well. The album includes so many great tracks including The Living Years, Taken In, one of their early pop hits, the deep and dark Silent Running, and Over My Shoulder to name few. While so much is highlighted here, there just could've been a little bit more to add here like the original version of All I Need Is A Miracle instead of the 1996 rerecorded version, and the fact that the overseas version was not copy-proof like this packaged edition is.

Still, for anybody who is a fan of Mike Rutherford and his days of Genesis, or Squeeze, Hits by Mike & The Mechanics is a nice delight for anybody who loves great 80's pop music. I really still enjoy these guilty pleasure classics, and they still sound great today. All you should need, is their miracle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! February 28, 2009
Format:Audio CD
I've always been a fan of Mike & the mechanics, and have been looking for a greatest hits CD for a long time. Found it here! The album offers both ballads & faster paced songs, with the melodys blending beautifly together. I found it hard not to like the entire CD. Definitly can recommend this one!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the songs I remember February 28, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It did not have the versions of Silent Running and All I Want Is A Miracle that I remember. The arrangement was kind of campy and not the rock versions I grew up with. So it's just okay.

Good songs for all you truly nostalgic people who dwell in the music of the '80s. Has all the old favorites that you've heard played on the radio. High marks, magna cum-laude. Definitely recommend.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mike & The Mechanics/Hits August 26, 2013
By TLC
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Even though I love the songs on this album, I wasn't able to sample the music online and didn't realize that most of the songs were either live or re-mixes. I prefer the original songs, so I returned the CD. There was no fault at all with the seller. I rec'd this item in great time and the album was in perfect condition with no defects. I rec'd a prompt reply to my return inquiry and was issued an immediate refund without any further questions asked. I would still purchase from this seller in the future. Thank you!
