Essential,
By Brian Shaw "bshaw20" (Orlando, FL USA) - See all my reviews

Well first things first, it is missing the awesome jam "Candy Girl," but that is a Streetwise release, so I understand. Don't let that omission deter you from buying this amazing disc from the original boy band New Edition. Don't get rid of your Greatest Hits vol. 1, even though it is kind of old, it has album versions, the remix of "Boys to Men" and of course, the Streetwise jams. The new release has digitally remastered single versions of the jams, which can be kind of weird for people who are used to the album versions. It also includes two soundtrack hits, and the wackest NE jam, "You Don't Have To Worry." I had wanted to delete this song from the first time I heard it. I really hate this song. Thank goodness it is the last track. By the way, another gripe, "Word To The Mutha!" (remix) should've been included.Let's run down the tracks: 1. Cool It Now - this is the video and single version. It is missing the acapella "cool it now...." part, and the long intro. It also omits part of the second chorus. 2. Mr. Telephone Man - single and video version, I think it is identical to the album version. 3. Lost In Love - jarring to first-time listeners. Has lots of added 80's effects, and does not have the fadeout of the album and Vol. 1 version. But a great track. 4. Count Me Out - single version as well, it omits the "Count Me Out" in the beginning of the song, as heard on the album and on Vol. 1. 5. A Little Bit Of Love - greatly enhanced by the remaster. 6. With You All The Way - sounds similar to the remastered version found on "Slow Jams." 7. Earth Angel - sounds similar to the remastered version found on "Slow Jams." 8. Once In A Lifetime Groove - been awhile since I heard this jam, so I am not sure if it is the same version. Benefited from the remaster. 9. Helplessly In Love - glad to hear that it is not the remixed "dance" version of this sentimental jam. Nice to have this on CD format. I can now delete the MP3. Tracks 10-14 are all from the Heart Break album, which is a very poor sounding release. Their best album needs to be remastered, but these songs are a great start. They all sound great, "Can You Stand The Rain" is the familiar version and not the remix. Nice to hear these songs without the introludes, although I miss those. 15. Hit Me Off - the same version on the CD single, since the album version has the crowd cheers fading out (from "It Feels So Good") while the song starts. At least they didn't use the Shaq remix! 16. I'm Still In Love With You - the single and video version, it is another jam that could be hard to get used to if you are used to the album. It has a different beginning, missing the long intro, and of course, the finale is different as well, since this is shortened. This song fades out, the original album version has Ricky singing "...still in love, I'm still in love with you" then the song ends. Unfortunately that part has been left off the single version. 17. You Don't Have To Worry - single version, for fans of this wack jam, it is different from the album version. I wish I can delete this stupid track. There you go, I hope this helps. I have reviewed several albums here in Amazon but this is the first time I took the time to review each track. It is because I really like this group. New Edition rules! Now if only they can release the definitive DVD with all their videos, but that is another story.

The latest NE venture,

When I found out that Geffen Records released a new New Edition hits collection, I said, "Don't we already have enough of these?" But I heard from other people that this collection is better than the other NE collections. I checked it out, and actually, there IS some truth to that argument. This hits collection is pretty accurate, as it contains a good number of songs from each of the albums. But most (if not ALL) of these songs are also featured somewhere within the other collections, so if you already have those, there's really no point in picking THIS up. But it's still a great collection. I only have two concerns, though. I was a little upset that there are shortened versions of songs like "Cool It Now" and "If It Isn't Love". Why not put the album versions on here? And the only reason I think "You Don't Have to Worry" is included is because it was the last song New Edition released as a group (charts will show you it wasn't anywhere near a hit). In the end, if you never picked up any of New Edition's albums, then this is the best hits collection for you. Anthony Rupert

This is the best of all the NEW EDITION compilations...,

One person asked where is candy girl... If you know the history then you wouldnt have to ask, but for those who dont. Candy Girl, Jealous Girl, Popcorn Love and Is This the End was all recorded under Streetwise. All the others were recorded under MCA/UNIVERSAL. THose were all the jams but you still have to give this CD its props... I have every NEW EDITION CD (I still have my original albums as well) but of all the compilations this one includes 2 songs that were never on any of the LP's(CD'S) for those who have no clue what an LP is... lol Helplessly in Love from the Dragnet Soundtrack and Once In A LIfetime Groove from the Running Scared soundtrack. ALso at the beginning of the CD if u rewind it back for 1 minute there is a special message from Michael Bivins to the fans. If you have been a true NE fan for the past 21 years as I have then you will know how special this is. You must get this CD

An almost perfect timeline of their career,
By A. Lawson (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hits (Audio CD)
New Edition is one of the most enduring r&b figures in the music business today. The boy band-turned-r&b supergroup never lost their touch, even as they matured and grew physically as well as musically. They have had other hits compilations, but this one is clearly the best assembled. From the chart-topping summer smash of '84 in "Cool It Now" to the chart-topping comeback of '96 with "Hit Me Off", the 12-year tenure of this hits collection is an almost complete overview of their career. I say almost because their debut's hits are not present ("candy girl", "is this the end", "jealous girl", "popcorn love"). In turn, its quality drops a star, but overall a great purchase for anyone with a remote interest the group's evolution from their bubblegum-tuned sound in the '80s to their urban soul format we are accustomed to today.

You can't please everybody...but it's the best comp yet,
By Bad Willow (Sunnydale,USA) - See all my reviews

I've read some reviews complaining about the fact that some songs are in single edits.Others complain that the songs from Streetwise Records are not on here.
The longer versions of certain songs are still available on their parent albums if that's serious people. It sounds better than the vinyl I use to listen to the songs on in the 80's.For Streetwise, get the "Candy Girl" album on CD.In short,I guess you can't please everybody but it's the best NE hits comp released. P.S.:It's about time someone released "Helplessly In Love" on a NE compilation!

Very CRUCIAL Compilation,

Hey now, if you don't have this CD, you NEED to get it!!! The only disappointing thing is that songs from their first album are not included, but the first album was released when they were really, really young and there after the songs/albums are more mature so to delete those songs from the more mature sounding songs isn't half bad. (I know that was a run on sentence but I just couldn't chop it up)
I was soooooo glad to see "Helplessly In Love" on there, my favorite NE slo jam (of course a Jimmy jam and Terry Lewis jam). If you don't have it, whatcha waitin' 4?

Love Me Some N.E.!!,
By
This review is from: Hits (Audio CD)
Back in the day, NE ruled the R&B charts. Heck, they use to be on the cover of Right On! magazine every week for about 4-5 years straight. This album is a great combination of their older hits and some of their newer ones. I especially love the Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced/written tracks. N.E. is probably one of the best modern day guy groups around. I do hope they leave Bad Boy and hook up with a record company that KNOWS how to promote them. I also hope that if another new album is planned, that they hook up with Jam/Lewis again.

The BEST of my generation!!!,
By Cisco Kid Redux (Bay Area, CA) - See all my reviews

FINALLY! A collection befitting the best R&B band of the last 20 years. When their "Greatest Hits Vol.1!" came out, I expected a lot more (or at least, a Vol.2); a lot of their most beloved songs were missing and was looking more like a prelude to Vol.2 (which never came). This is THE collection of songs I have been waiting for! Even has their most sought-after, non-N.E. album track, "Helplessly in-love", which existed only in the Dragnet movie soundtrack (Dan Ackroyd/Tom Hanks remake) - that makes this collection an instant must-buy! If I have to say something critical about it, it would have to be the inclusion of a couple of songs that I've never heard of; these must've been recently released (not very NE-like). Bottom line is, although New Edition has lost a lot of their melodious music composition that they possessed in the 80's-early 90's, they will always be remembered for their massive contribution to the R&B world!

The Best NE Hits Collection By Far,
By MJS (Vancouver) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hits (Audio CD)
New Edition remains one of the most influential R&B groups of the past 20 years. So it was only right that they get a proper Greatest Hits set. Hence, "Hits", which is their story in 17 solid tracks.
If I had to do without any of these tracks, it would be "Once In A Lifetime Groove" (cute, but not necessary), and replace it with "Boys To Men" (remixed version). On the other hand, The remix of N.E. Heartbreak is an added bonus. I also would've rather had the album version of "If It Isn't Love". Otherwise, this is the best New Edition Hits collection by far. |
