Biography

He was born Barret Hansen, being the proud owner of a master's degree in music from UCLA under that moniker, but he's far better known to millions of radio listeners as "Doctor Demento." In 1995, he celebrated his 25th anniversary of broadcasting the greatest novelty records of all time, both new and old. In that time, he's elevated the novelty record -- in all its myriad styles -- to a high trash… Read more in Amazon's Dr. Demento Store

4.0 out of 5 stars The Final Frontier, May 29, 2003

This review is from: Hits From Outer Space (Audio CD)
This is a Dr. Demento compilation featuring cuts with an outer space theme. With only twelve tracks, it's a bit on the short side. They could easily have fit half a dozen other cuts on it. Off the top of my head, I can name "The Flying Saucer", "The Martian Hop", "Martian Boogie", "Kirk and Spock", "Star Wars Cantina" and "Yoda" as tracks that could have been included. But I will judge the CD based on what it is, not what it could have been. First off, let me advise you not to get this CD if you are not interested in Star Trek, because over half the tracks have a Star Trek theme. "Beam Me Up, Scotty" is a slight, but fun, song based on the misquoted Star Trek catch phrase. "Star Trekkin'" is the funniest song ever written about Star Trek. "The Saga Begins" is a great parody by "Weird Al" that sets the plot of Star Wars:Episode I to the tune of "American Pie". "Star Drek" is a classic skit parodying Star Trek that will be familiar to regular listeners of the Dr. Demento Show. "Do the Picard" is a terrific song about Star Trek: The Next Generation. "Carmen Miranda's Ghost" is a strange, but fun, song about a space station being haunted by, yes, Carmen Miranda's ghost. "They're Here" is a decent song about alien invaders that has a similar arrangement to "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!". In the corny "Twinkle Twinkle Little Earth", Mr. Spock says a few words about the stars. I didn't care much for "Banned From Argo", which is about shore leave. In the great "The Ballad of William Robinson", the now middle aged Will Robinson of Lost in Space updates us on his life. "What's Up Spock" is an okay parody of the rap song "What's Up Doc?". "Star Trip" covers similar ground as "Star Drek", but it's twice as long and half as funny.

For those of you who remember the 'Top Ten' or the ' Funny Fifty' from the old 'Dr. Demento' radio show in the '70's and '80's -- this CD is for you.
The CD spans into the '90's as well but has the best sci-fi spoof songs that were broadcast by Dr. D.
It is like being taken back in time.
Buy and enjoy.

Most of these I remember, a few I've never heard, or at least not heard from beginning to end. These are classic Demento tunes. You'll laugh like a hyena this is so funny. Pick it up and enjoy.
