Fun, unique takes on pop songs, June 9, 2009
This review is from: Hits the Hits (Audio CD)
Shawn Lee is a talented composer and musician. I first heard his soundtrack for the video game Bully and was hooked. He is well-versed in obscure and multicultural instruments, but he also incorporates some of the best styles from the past. He knows how to master a 60's sound, but also can keep it sounding fresh. You will be astounded at how he can take even the most tiresome pop song and transform it.
His version of "Hey Ya" is like Ramsey Lewis sat down at the piano in a Greenwich Village coffeehouse in 1960. "Get UR Freak On" is no longer a catchy (and ultimately annoying) hook, but a surf noir monster mantra. "Toxic" is re-imagined as a sexy sitar grind.
Many of these songs I would never listen to in their original states, but Lee has used his creativity to elevate them. I often play this when friends are over and someone always wants to know who it is.
