classic best of vol. 1 from Speezy Ace,
By
This review is from: Hits (Audio CD)
Features some of his best songs that he put out on his first 5 albums. Could have been a 3 disc set and still got a 5 star rating. Spice 1 is one of the top 5 rappers ever if you ask me. I have all of his albums and compilations & group albums (around 15 total) and not one would I give less than a 4 star rating. You gotta check this or any of his ablums out, you won't regret it. Features 2 new songs on this one but they aren't the greatest but the cd is still straight blazin'.

This is Spice 1's best songs all on one cd. What More could you ask for! I mean you got Welcome To The Ghetto perhaps his best song ever made. 187 Proof and Pure songs so creative it will have u rewinding and rewinding forever to catch all the drinks and drugs he names on them. He also collabo's with Mc Eiht, 2pac, Method Man & Some of his friends like G-Nut. This is a good album of songs compiled from his earlier albums which are all very good too.He is a rapper who deserves much more credit then he gets. He his a pure murder, gangsta rapper. He Speaks The Real.

Missing some songs, but this is still a worthy Spice 1 anthology,

Because i did not wanna buy all of Spice's albums, I went out and bought this hits collection. Alot of my favorites, Like the classic ''Trigga gots no heart'' and ''In my neighborhood'', are on here much to my delight. This was fortunately released in 1998, shortly before Spice 1 started releasing a slew of seemingly dissapointing albums. It is cool to see how Spice was actually one of the most underrated rappers of the 90's judging from the material on here. The major highlights of this cd is the classic Spice 1/2pac collaboration ''Jealous got me strapped'', ''The murda show'', ''Welcome to the ghetto'' [Even though i'm still looking for the version of this song which has Spice rapping an extra verse that's not heard on the usual album version], ''187 proof'' and ''187 pure''. The unfortunate flaws with this collection is that several of Spice's best songs are noticably absent, Like the classic ''Born 2 die'', ''East Bay gangster'', ''Peace to my nine'', etc. I personally think the 2 exlusive tracks would've been better off on an album rather than this collection. If you never heard Spice 1, I reccomend this as a good place to start as it does give you a feel of what Spice 1's music is like.

California rap at it's absolute best.,

I understand why Spice 1 isn't a household names. He has not gained commercial success to appeal to the mainstream audiences, but the fact remains. He is quite possibly California's best rapper, and if not top 5 of the West-Coast all time. His rhymes and flow are second to none, and even though I live in Toronto (represent for T.O.), I can gain a huge perspective as to what life in the Dirty Bay (Oakland specifically) is like. I am aware that the state of California has produced some of the best hip-hop ever (Dre, Snoop, Tha Alkaholiks, Ice Cube, E-40, Xzibit, etc.), but his depiction of California, especially on the track "Killerfornia" is incredible. I for one can't get enough of Spice 1, and I believe that anyone and everyone should check out this severely underrated and underappreciated emcee, as well as his early beginnings with classic albums like 187 He Wrote, Amerikkka's Nightmare & Immortalized. Spice 1 is a pioneer for not only West Coast hip-hop, but the entire genre of hip-hop in general.

Review of Spice-1's "Hits",
By Crazy Jim (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews

One of rap's most underrated rappers is Bay Area artist, Spice-1. While not quite on the level of other great overlooked rappers such as DJ Quik and Yukmouth, Spice has always been consistent with his work. In this, the first volume of his best work over the past decade, the casual listener can get a good idea on why Spice-1 deserves props. From collaborations with big-name stars like the late Tupac Shakur and Method Man to the hit single, "Welcome To The Ghetto" which samples the Marvin Gaye classic, "Makes Me Wanna Holler", it's all here. Well, almost everything. His superb track, "Born II Die" off the Tales From The Hood movie soundtrack is missing. Just my opinion but it should have been included. Tracks like "Dirty Bay" and "1990-Sick (Kill' Em All)" are some real top-notch gangsta anthems and the Jamaican-influenced "Nobody Want Work" is a real dope party track that should appeal to that crossover crowd. If you have slept on Spice-1, this is a good way to get introduced to an excellent MC. I will admit that my knowledge of his work before I came acoss this album was limited to a handful of soundtrack appearances and collaborations but this certainly made me a fan.
