The Outlaws - 'Hittin' The Road' (Shrapnel),
By
This review is from: Hittin the Road (Audio CD)
I realize that good southern rock has never really died out,but I haven't heard too much about the Outlaws in some time now.Happen to come across this live CD,so I thought I'd check it out.Good sound quality,I noticed. Many of you are probably already familiar with most of the ten tracks played here, like "There Goes Another Love Song","Superficial Love","Ghost Riders In The Sky","Evil,Wicked,Mean&Nasty" and their signature tune "Green Grass And High Tide"(has it REALLY been thirty years since this song first came out?)Still love hearing those most recogized played guitar licks, you know...later in the song.Line-up:Hugh Thomasson and Henry Paul-guitar&vocals,Frank O'Keefe-bass,Billy Jones-guitar and Monte Yoho-drums.Obviously,this CD should appeal to fans of Blackfoot,Molly Hatchet,Marshall Tucker Band and .38 Special.Southern rock fans, rejoice!

Top Quality Rock Guitar,

Henry Paul may have had his moments but the outlaws shined on long after he came and left. They were Florida's guitar army with and without Henry Paul. Their best music came after he left. This is a prime example of it too.

Great 90s Rock From A Great 70s Band,

Although I liked BRING IT BACK ALIVE better, this is a great live album by the best band ever. Even though Hughie Thomasson is the only original member on this album, it still remains one of the best albums of 1993.

The Live versions of the songs on this album are not all that great. "Ghost Riders" is exceptionally disappointing, though "Hurry Sundown" sounded pretty good. It would be a boon if the other albums were re-released. I have met only disappointment in trying to locate even a vinyl of them.

For Die Hard Fans or the Band's Mother,

I used to see these guys play all the time when this album was released. Hughie was the only original member, but B.B. Borden was enough of a side man celebrity (ala Bobby Rondinelli) that he added some creedance to the band. Then there was a veritable unknown by the name of Chris Hicks who injected so much life into the band it wasn't funny. That kid had a major voice and it was no wonder that Marshall Tucker scooped him up soon after. This isn't your father's Outlaws, but it is by no means junk. If you've seen this version of the band play or if your are a die hard fan, I truly recommend it. Pour a bourbon and branch water, sit back and love it as a mother loves her child even if they are dancing the wrong way at the church Christmas pageant.

Do you recall hearing the title cut "Hittin' the Road" hittin' the radio airways back in 1993? That's what drove me to pick this CD up shortly after its release. I was very pleasantly surprised to how good it is. I was also fortunate to see this version of Hughie's OUTLAWS live in Big Flats, NY in 1994 (pre Skynyrd) - They were very good.
If you are an OUTLAWS fan and don't have this one, I highly recommend it. You won't be sorry. H.T., RIP.

More guitars doesn't necessarily produce better music,

When the Outlaws lost Henry Paul they lost their create force. They tried to make up it, by replacing him with two guitarists. The sound never matched their Paul days, nor did it approach the sound created by the likes of Rossington/Collins of Lynyrd Skynyrd or the original southern rock duo, Allman/Betts.
