About the Author
Barbara Pate Glacel has followed the course of diverse and challenging careers over the last three decades.
As a human relations professional, Dr. Glacel began her career in academia, teaching business and political science at several educational institutions, including the University of Alaska and Central Michigan University. In 1984, she moved into the private sector, working in management first for ARCO Alaska and then for the Hay Group, and finally founding her own company, VIMA International The Leadership Group, where she acted as CEO for twelve years. Having sold her interest in VIMA, Dr. Glacel continues to serve a select number of clients in executive coaching, team development, and organizational change. She has authored three books and numerous articles and is a frequent public speaker.
Married for thirty-one years to career Army office Brigadier General (Retired) Robert Glacel, Barbara is the mother of three grown daughters: Jennifer, Sarah, and Ashley. In addition to maintaining a household and raising a family while moving often, as dictated by the needs of the military, she also became involved in a number of Army policy issues. She actively volunteered in the many Army communities in which she lived and was appointed to several committees, including the Department of Defense Science Board Quality of Life panel in 1995 and the Army Science Board from 1986 to 1990. She currently serves on the prestigious Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services, whose civilian members were selected for their achievements in their professions and civic affairs.
As a breast cancer survivor since 1997, Barbara has become an advocate for others facing this disease, working to provide early detection as well as to find a cure. Through the American Cancer Society Reach to Recovery program, she volunteers her time advising breast cancer patients. She has walked hundreds of miles in the American Cancer Society Relays for Life, the Susan G. Komen Foundation Races for the Cure, and the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day sixty-mile walks, fundraising many thousands of dollars through her efforts. She also testified before the Subcommittee on the Civil Service of the United States House of Representatives Committee on Government Reform and Oversight about the needs for improved access to medical care in the military. She speaks and writes about cancer and survivorship nationally and overseas.
Living each day as a breast cancer survivors, Barbara enjoys her family, her friends, and meaningful work with a new perspective on life.
