Editorial Reviews

This is the latest CD from Hittman, and it contains all original material produced by industry favorites like Dr. Dre, who also appears on 3 tracks. The rugged West Coast rapper Hittman played a significant role on Dr. Dre's mammoth "2001" album (performing on 13 of 22 tracks), and he was instantly dubbed Dre's new protege. This CD has all exclusive raps from Hittman, and the emphasis is on the West Coast and New York. Hittman will be on tour with 20 shows a month in various national cities. Street teams will have an emphasis on both coasts with album release parties in Los Angeles and New York.

This CD has great beats and guest spots by Dr. Dre and Knoc-Turn'al. If you're a fan of Aftermath & Dre, you can't go wrong with Hittman!

Hittman ( 9/10 ) – This is Hitt at the peak of his career. Though this record was released in 2005, much of it was recorded in the late 90’s & early 00’s while he was still with Dre and Aftermath. Lyrically, he had the flow, voice and content to have put out classic material if more time had been invested into his solo albums; and this is on full display through this compilation release. Much of the content runs similar to what was heard on Dre’s ‘Chronic 2001’ album with at least one track, ‘Bloww’, nearly making the cut for 2001’s tracklist. Several others were also likely written for what was intended to be Hitt’s Aftermath solo debut, ‘Big Hitt: The Last Days Of Brian Bailey’. With creativity and control differences coming between Aftermath and Hitt, the project was dropped and never released. Even with a mix of Aftermath and newer material, Hitt remains consistent on the record and puts out raw hip hop.

Production ( 8/10 ) – Big names such as Dr. Dre, Battlecat, Mel-Man and Scott Storch provided the production for this project, giving it a true west coast sound. In large part, the tracks all stick to traditional hip hop, without mixing much, if any, pop or radio aspects. Due to its compilation nature, there is a wide range of sound when listened to as a whole.

Featured Artists ( 9/10 ) – Studio albums tend to be of much higher quality when the artist goes in large part solo with intermittent guest spots. ‘Hittmanic Verses’ abides by this with only four total guest spots, one from Dre and three from Knoc-turn’al (another artist that fell from Dre’s watch after various guest spots on ‘2001’). All involved artists hold obvious west coast ties and fit right in with the direction of the album.
