5.0 out of 5 stars Heirloom Hmong Red is Golden Orange
The photographic depiction is a bit misleading as the fruits are white to pale green, turning golden-orange as they ripen. A very productive and pleasantly flavored cultivar that stays mild even when large. The fruit seems to appear out of nowhere from spaces that seemed empty the previous day; providing a continuous source of enjoyment and garden amazement...

1.0 out of 5 stars Lousy Germination
My children and I ordered a selection of really fun seeds from you. (Hmong Red Cucumber
Black Sea Man Tomato, Rare Tigger Melon, Mexican Miniature Watermelon, Toga Striped Eggplant, Purple Cauliflower, Unwins Exhibiton 7 Pound Onion, Rare Red Bull Brussels Sprout)

My germination rate has been about 25% or less. All my other seeds from other companies...

The photographic depiction is a bit misleading as the fruits are white to pale green, turning golden-orange as they ripen. The heirloom seed I purchased (not from this vendor) was collected from a Hmong (Meo) immigrant and is also available from large, widely respected seed vendors. Millions of the Hmong tribe live on the borders of Thailand, China, Burma, Laos and Vietnam and are a very ancient people.

This cultivar is a garden novelty for those fortunate to have the space required for a large selection of heirloom vegetables. It would not be my first selection, or recommendation for those limited by their space to only one Cucumis sativus.

5.0 out of 5 stars So rewarding, April 15, 2009

Do not be scared off by people who complain about germination. Germination is tricky and can easily be ruined by the grower. I am a beginning gardener (2 years). I have purchased many seeds from this provider, including the red cucumbers, purple broccoli, artichokes, baby corn, red carrots, broccoflower, and especially anything unusual. Every single thing I purchased worked and germinated.(I am not saying every seed germinated, but plenty enough did.) I am not surprised that maybe the seed might not be as hardy as common seeds, but Hirts specializes in unusual seeds (that have not been around for centuries), so maybe they are not as hardy. But they do germinate - even for a know-nothing like me.
The best thing is -OH MY GOODNESS - HOW DELICIOUS - HOW REWARDING - to go and pick vegetables for dinner in your garden. The flavor of home-grown, without pesticides, etc. is out of this world!
Do not let others deter you from this wonderful adventure.

My germination rate has been about 25% or less. All my other seeds from other companies are doing wonderful on my tables, but my Hirt's seeds are in a category of their own, small, stunted, wimpy, or not at all. I will not be ordering from you again, and I'm sorry I wasted my money.

I am a trained in seed germination. Every seed in this packet had root damage in the embryo and was not able to produce a seedling. Zero. I won't buy from this vendor again.

Started in a warm greenhouse with light potting soil, I had 100% germination. All of the seedlings look great.

Very fresh seeds..I soaked them in a 100ppm solution of gibberellic acid for around 3 hours, and used the gremination station sold on Amazon. It has a heated pad to aid in gremination. The seeds litterly came up over night after the soak.24 hours to be exact. All healthy, thick stems...very pleased

Picture of red cucumbers is very deceiving. The internet has plenty of warnings about the misleading advertisement about this product. This issue is not specific to this vender but others are advertising the Hmung with pictures of red cucumbers-shame. They get rusty orange at best.
Good producing vines but found to be very seedy if harvested at rusty brown stage. Would not buy again.

1.0 out of 5 stars be careful, March 24, 2009
This review is from: Hmong Red Cucumber - 10 Seeds
I was considering buying these seeds because I liked the interesting color. While the reviews of Hirt's aren't too bad at amazon, they sure are bad at Dave's garden watchdog. Amazon removed the link so you will have to google it yourself if you want to see how bad the reviews actually are in a non-loaded environment.
