Morrissey has continued to release slapdash collections which pull in singles and b-sides and with those collections the completest ends up re-buying the same songs over and over again just to get a few new tracks.
See his most recent greatest hits as an example. You get the new singles which makes sense, but then there are 3 or four old singles, which are redundant to the greatest hits that came out a few years before, and to add insult to injury the two new songs many people would have bought the collection for end up on his next album. My understanding is Morrissey did not approve this package, but all the more reason to buy it (what he has approved is frustrating). Because it makes at least 3 of his random collections pointless and gets rid of the redundancy. A good place for new fans to start and for old fans who would like to drop Bona Drag, World of Morrissey, and My Early Burglary Years. iTunes has made artist like Morrissey more manageable , but as a fan coming up in the 90's Morrissey's catalog has always been frustrating. I love the guy's music, but it seems like he has taken advantage of his fan base, or maybe it is just the big bad record company. Anyway these are all complaints for pre-iTunes thinking and for those of us who like a hardcopy of the music we buy. This is a very good one stop shop for the years 88-95, which overall were his best years-post Smiths. The proper albums are still worth a tour:check out Viva Hate, Your Arsenal, and Vauxhall and I.

I bought myself this for my birthday and I couldn't be happier. This is my absolute favorite period of The Moz, bringing back so many great memories for me, especially the stuff from 1988. In 1988-95' Moz could do no wrong in my book. Maybe I shouldn't be bringing this up, but I don't care for the *new* Moz at all, and I realize we should embrace the future, but he's lost the magic. My only problem with this is that "Nobody Loves Us" is absent from this otherwise stellar collection of songs. In any case, this is a stunningly gorgeous showcase of wonderful songs. Get your tissues out and sing your life!

This is an excellent, comprehensive collection of audio gems from Morrissey. Even if you already own his albums, this assortment of 60+ tracks is well worth having. Many of these tracks are superior to the regular album tracks. Highly recommended.

For those who always had a fondness for Morrissey but could never afford to be a true completist by buying 21 different singles and EP's, this long-overdue package is highly recommended! Many of the tracks you surely have off of various Moz albums and other singles packages, but this attractive 3-CD set gives you the chance to hear all the B-sides-- many of which are just as brilliant as their A-side counterparts-- in chronological order of their release. For me, the years 1988 to 1995 coincided roughly with high school and college, and truly are the golden period of Morrissey's solo career.

Great must have collection for Morrissey fans. Everything you could possibly want is here. It's nice to finally have the studio version of Jack the Ripper which is creepier than the live version (though I still like the live one better).

Simply put...this collection is NON PLUS ULTRA.
There is none higher. No 'loudness wars', no major fuzz or buzz about it, no need to be a completist or anything, this is the collection to fall in love with Moz all over again, just like the first time...

This 3-CD "box set" is toted as being "absolutely essential" for
those who collect or simply enjoy listening to Morrissey. However, if you really want a taste of singles box sets - try The Smiths,[the one with the Jaguar V12 car photographed on the front].12 CD's of pure heaven for about $50. Meanwhile, back in His Masters Voice/Parlophone basement we have singles from 1988-1995; with Morrissey strutting his stuff. I do not have the time to list every single. Most of the songs should be familiar to those trained in the art of Morrisseyism. The biggest surprise to me was the amount of singles time given to live perfromances, many of which are recorded quite well. Also, the actual sound quality of these singles is crisp and sharp. Most likely taken fron the original archived recordings. Some folks might think this whole "Morrissey compilations" epidemic is full of commercialism and smacks of repitition. Within these 3 CD's there are songs I have never heard before. Which leads me to conclude that with the souind quality, live excellence and some rarity; this compilation is essential! As for the price...the marketplace varies. Lastly, has anyone ever seen a "Hairdresser on Fire." Anywhere? [London, Paris, New York, Hong Kong??] |
