Owned Two Of These For Over A Year! What's With The Bad Reviews? I Like It!!,
This review is from: HoMedics Sound SPA Platinum Sound Machine with CD & Atomic Clock Radio (Electronics)
I want to address a couple of issues from what I have read in the negative reviews.
A few have said that the backlight is "too bright." Are you kidding??? They MUST have sensitive eyes because it's actually TOO LOW in brightness!! And remember I own two of these. Don't listen to those who say it's too bright as something is definitely wrong with their eyes! Also, the projector that projects the time on the ceiling is nice but I wish it was more brighter. And of course, a dumb person here and there on the reviews keeps saying the time keeps "changing" on them. HELLO??! There are different TIME ZONES that you can set in the back of the unit. PUT IT ON YOUR TIME ZONE AND IT WON'T KEEP "CHANGING!!!" Some people obviously didn't read the manual thoroughly. Since it does have the ability to connect to the Atomic Clock servers, should you have it on the wrong "time zone" it will "adjust" it to the "correct" one you left it on! Everything works fine and is great. The only annoyance is that the FM radio tuner is not digital it's just a knob so you have to move it VERY slow (on a bad reception radio station) when tuning in a station. But if you just leave it one station usually (like i do) it shouldn't be such a problem. So yes, having seen some of these negative reviews, I wanted to write a positive one in case someone is on the fence. I have both of them working and I've had them for over a year. They work great and I don't regret my purchase.

Beware of the back light!,

This product has a 2-way switch on the back for the "back light" control. It's suppose to be Bright/Dim, but it should be labeled Bright/Brighter.
If you need anything approaching a dark bedroom, avoid this product. If you can sleep in any light, go for it -- everything else did work as advertised. PS - This appears to be the same unit as the "SS-6000".

Great CD alarm clock but WAY too bright,

This is my second attempt in buying a CD alarm clock and I do not understand why the manufacturers make the LCD so bright! Even on its dimmest setting, this clock illuminates my room and makes it difficult to sleep. Additionally, the projection feature is too bright even when I've covered the LCD. I'm trying to find a creative solution because it's too much of a hassle to return.
I gave this alarm clock 3 stars because the sound quality is good and I like the nature sound options. I would be entirely happy with it if it weren't for the brightness. It's a great option for a child's room or anywhere light isn't a problem.

I've had this sound machine/clock radio for a couple years and am thinking of ordering a 2nd one for my home office. This has been a very functional and reliable alarm clock. I primarily purchased this clock/CD combination so that I could use my meditation CDs in my bedroom. I have had a couple times that the time had suddenly flipped into a different time zone, but that wasn't a problem as my husband gets up later than I do and uses an old Timex digital alarm clock, so I have a back-up. The HoMedics clock eventually corrects itself, so no big deal for me. However, this has been a very rare occurence. I've had other clock radios, but this one has worked out the best, and I like having the CD and radio options. Since I can fall asleep in the regular room light, the back light is not bothersome for me. I don't need the time projection and usually ignore it. In all, I believe this was a great purchase, and I am ready for a 2nd one for my office.

When first purchased thought this would be great with all the features packed in for a good price but I was wrong. The natures sounds are pretty good except the waterfall sound seems like just white noise. The radio picks up stations well. Nice choices for alarm sounds. The cd player works but the motor is loud and sounds like it is cheaply made and will not last long. The 2 main problems are the back light and the automic clock. The backlight literally illuminates the entire room. Making it very hard to sleep. You could almost read a book by it. I've tried putting black electrical tape around the edges to reduce the light without much luck. The ABSOLUTE WORST THING is the automic clock that just randomly resets itself! Doesn't matter even if you turn the feature off. When it does sync with the automic clock it changes the time to pacific coast time...I live in the central time zone. Which creates a BIG PROBLEM when you have to be at work at 8AM and your clock decided to change the time two hours back in the middle of the night. Will never buy another item made by this company again. There is probably a law suit there for someone if they are waking up late for work with this thing changing the time constantly. BE WARE!!!

I bought this sound machine for my 8 year old Aspergers son. The brightness that others are commenting on is all relative! First, I don't think it is a whole lot brighter than many other clocks on the market these days but it was enough of a glow that my son no longer feels the need to keep the closet light on! This is a good thing and I had hoped it would be bright enough to double as a night light.
This clock, sound machine, CD player is easy to use no manual required to figure it out! The sound is great and my son falls asleep right away now. The timer is a great function on this as well. The time projects onto the ceiling and is very easy to read. The alarm can be set to radio, sound or buzzer. Over all we love this item, it is simple but loaded with features. |
