Nice as a decorative item - but not for relaxation., March 30, 2005
This review is from: HoMedics WRF-REL EnviraScape Illuminated Rainforest Fountain with 6 Natural Sounds (Health and Beauty)
First of all my wife would probably give this four or five stars - she loves it. As it is reasonably cheap it earned an extra star from me. If I had paid any more for it I would have been tempted to give it two stars.
If I disliked this item so much we could have returned it. However I must admit that it makes a nice decorative conversation piece - however we had purchased it for relaxation purposes - which I think is what it was designed for. I feel on this level it fails considerably.
It was simple enough to put together - once you figured out how to do it properly. As is too common these days the instructions just werent clear enough. Most of the times I tried to submerge the pump under the water (something I didnt figure out I had to do for a while) the connecting tube would come away from the pump - but I got it there in the end.
YOU SHOULD NOTE THAT WATER WILL SPLASH OUT OF THE DEVICE ONTO YOUR SURFACE. This can be annoying - they have however provided a little matt to sit it on, but I feel this isnt the most decorative way to display such an item. So be prepared to have to wipe down the surface at least daily.
Ok so when its on and your awake - it looks nice - with the water running down in constant streams and the nice colourful subtle lighting. We looked forward to firing it up when we went to bed (we have alot of street noise which we hoped to dampen out.)
The description of this item says it sounds like some tropical downpour in some country or other. I would personally describe it as sounding like a toilet cystern that is constantly filling up after flushing and needs fixing. It doesnt sound like rain to me. Secondly whilst the electronic "natural" sounds are ok, with no noticeable loops and a decent sound quality, they could have been timed to sound more relaxing. They are too intense. For example for the one sound setting - instead of a couple of distant crickets and the odd insect chirping up every now and then, it sounds like a hundred animals before an earthquake - chirping loudly and constantly to the point it is annoying. The loon setting is ok but sounds like a horror movie audio-track. Sunrise sounds like the music to a cheap Yoga DVD and windchimes sounds like a two year old child messing around on a casio keyboard. I thought that the item could redeem itself with "Thunder". I find thunder storms very relaxing. However I was disappointed to discover that it is literally constant rolling thunder. There are no natural gaps between thunder claps, it sounds more like a warzone with bombs hitting in the distance all the time. As I said my wife loves it, I however dont. But as the wife loves it its staying - and it looks pretty I guess.

rating based on value -- a great fountain for the price, December 27, 2003

Ok, so it's not the same as a $2000 stone fountain but for the price this is a great way to add something different to a room (I have mine in an upstairs bathroom). The sounds are all great, you can change the volume and the rate of water flow. A few of the nozzles don't seem to "rain" but you can't really tell from the front as it looks just fine. It is easy to fill and maintain. Plus, it's cheap enough that if after a year it breaks I can just replace it. It does spill a tiny bit out the front but on my bathroom counter it doesn't really matter, I just wipe it down. I only wish the sound portion had a "random" function that would change the sounds every once in awhile. It would also be great if the lights were synched to what the sounds were[]

Good for relaxation; bad in design, July 9, 2005
This review is from: HoMedics WRF-REL EnviraScape Illuminated Rainforest Fountain with 6 Natural Sounds (Health and Beauty)
I've owned this fountain for about 3 weeks now and have tried using it daily for it's relaxing sounds which are quite nice. Unfortunantly, the downfall of the fountain (pun intended) is that it leaks quite a bit of water out of it's backside. What this means to you is that water leaves the basin regularly enough that it can ruin the pump when it runs nearly dry. Another disadvantage is the water flow adjustment just doesn't work! It's a terrible engineering design, but what do you expect for under $30!
Never-the-less, it's a relatively good buy for it's soothing sounds (both the waterfall and it's musical background) as well as it's pretty illuminating design.
P.S. Don't place anything electrical around it and be sure to keep it at cords length from the outlet!
