Phillip on my Mind, January 29, 2002

While you are loading your CD jukebox for an evening of cabaret music, consider slipping in Phillip Officer's new CD, Hoagy On My Mind. Hoagy Carmichael was a songwriter inspired by the rich variety of America. You might not recognize his name, although you are probably familiar with many of his songs. Phillip Officer interprets them nicely, assisted by the jazz violinst Johnny Frigo. "Heart and Soul" is the track getting the most play on my copy, as I am amazed at how good the song can sound when it isn't weighed down by heavy-handed piano playing. "Two Sleepy People" and "When Love Goes Wrong" are entertaining, not to mention at odds in subject matter!
