I usually TIG weld aluminum, but I wanted to weld thicker/larger pieces faster. To MIG weld aluminum requires spray transfer, and 200 amps is about the bottom end for thicker pieces. The Hobart 210 MVP with the addition of this SpoolRunner 100 spool gun welds 1/4 inch aluminum like lightning! I can weld in a 1/4 of the time of TIG. No stack of dimes look, but nice smooth fully penetrated welds.

Now I can use my TIG for what it's best at, heat control on thin material.

BTW, If your looking for an industrial/commercial spool gun, look elsewhere. Like the similar Miller spool gun, this gun is top quality and made of a tough resin, but is not designed for continuous use.

Tryed out the spool gun this week on the aluminum. Was very impressed does a good job. Had a little trouble getting the wire through the push/pull gears. But after that works like a charm. I would recommend spare tips when you first start to you get use to it. Me and my Dad are well impressed with the performance.

Bought this unit to match to my Hobart 210 for aluminum welding.

1st off I have to say loading this gun is a nightmare. When I say nightmare I wish it was as easy as a nightmare. Spent nearly 45 minutes the 1st attempt, and had to take the gun apart to try and clear a jam. I don't think this will be a "practice makes perfect" It is just a very poor design. The problem is, the upper roller lifts to open the jaws to allow the wire to load through. The bottom roller is fixed and it too high. so when you push the wire from the back it hits the roller and lifts it too high to thread it through the next part. You have to pull the wire out and try "pre bending" exactly right to get it to fish through.
They needed to add an access hole after the rollers so you can use a thin screwdriver to help line up the holes after the roller.

Once loaded it works like a charm and lays down some nice welds.
So far I have welded as thin as .125 plate but butt welds. This was a little tricky and you have to move fast to keep from burning through, not the prettiest but strong.
As thick as 1/4" extrusions this welded very nice and laid down some nice dimestacks.

Purchased spool gun to experiment with welding aluminum. Did weld some aluminum samples and it seems to work fine. It does require some patience to feed the aluminum wire.

Tried it out this weekend and it has not disappointed us. Will have to get used to welding with aluminum as it is different from steel, but it works well. Nice and smooth. Would highly recommend it!

I purchased a MIG welder in order to be able to weld aluminum -- I bought the Hobart 210 MVP. I like the welder very much, but the spoolgun (SpoolRunner 100) is poor. It feeds inconsistently. With almost every rotation of the drive wheel in the spoolgun, the drive wheel's gear teeth come out of mesh with the push wheel. (These two wheels together push the wire through the gun, and their edges are toothed, acting as gears to rotate together to feed the wire. Only one of the them, the drive wheel, which is the lower one of the two, is driven by the motor, while the upper one, the so-called push wheel, turns passively due to its gear-like edge in contact with the gear-like edge of the drive wheel.) Because of the poor meshing of these wheels, the push wheel elevates away from the drive wheel, and a brief grinding noise can be heard until the gears mesh again. As the push wheel elevates, the wire feed stops for a moment -- for a noticeable fraction of a second at low feed rates, but for a subliminally brief moment at high feed rates. This shows up as a discontinuity in the weld bead. I am feeding 5356 aluminum wire of 0.030" diameter. The wheels are rated for 0.024" and 0.030" wire.
I found that the push wheel is free to move on its rotational axis by about 0.04 inch (that's 0.02" in either direction away from its optimal position). The teeth on its edge are not straight across but have a high area that is supposed to engage the high area on the drive wheel's teeth. The play in the line-up of the push wheel causes the high points of the two gears to miss each other. I took the push wheel off and placed very thin washers (24 gauge aluminum) on each side of the push wheel, which limits its movement along its axis, keeping the high points of the gear edges together.

I've had the Hobart 210MVP at let 3 years, and this gun for almost that long.

The gun works very well for me. I've used it to repair several thin alum boats and up to 1/4" fabrication with NO issues.

The easiest way to swap spools is to ditch the instructions and forget attempting to feed the wire thru both drive wheels with drive wheel release button depressed...Press the drive wheel release button as you feed wire up until it touches the upper drive wheel, then release the button and simply squeeze the torch trigger and it will feed the wire all by itself thru the drive wheels and thru the torch end.

That's right, just unwind a few inches of wire and feed it up until it touches the upper wheel, then release the red button and drop rest of spool in gun, but leave the clear plastic spool cover off.....Then turn on welder and squeeze torch trigger as you use your fingers to turn spool to feed wire enuff to where drive wheels grab it and feed it thru the rest of the way....Install clear cover and weld.

If then you have problems with wire slipping out of drive wheel groves, then follow instructions about how to adjust drive wheel tension.

Here is a picture of both my Hobart spool guns, This one on left, and the heavier one for my 230 Ironman...they both work very well
