5.0 out of 5 stars Good Wire Feed Welder - Complete Kit, March 11, 2001

This review is from: Hobart 500414 115-Volt, 135 Amp Handler 135 Welder (Tools & Home Improvement)
This welder is a good choice for the hobbiest/homeowner. I have used this to weld up to 1/4" mild steel and have very good success with it. The unit takes 115V so power is easy. The welder comes with the gauges and fittings required (minus bottle) for mig welding making for a very complete kit. I weld only steel and have not used the shielding gas components. The duty cycle prevents continous welding in all but the first setting, but with the time it takes for set up, moving around and such, I have only run into the duty cycle limit once and that was on the highest setting. Forced air cooling reduces the wait time. I have used stick and wire welders. I much favor the wire feed because the welding is much more consistant. People with easy access to 220 volt power may wish to go that way, but this is a very capable 115V unit. Things I like: Long gun cord, 115V, easy to use, uses standard, easily found consumables (wire, tips, etc.), comes complete with gas components (minus bottle), well built, easy wire loading. Improvements: still looking. Duty cycle will hamper production applications (true for all 115V machines) but the homeowner/farmer will be satisified.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great little wire welder package!, December 30, 2001

This review is from: Hobart 500414 115-Volt, 135 Amp Handler 135 Welder (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought my Hobart Handler 135 about a year and a half ago to use on the job as a commercial appliance repair technician, and could not be more pleased with its performance. Since 95% of my repair welding is on stainless steel, I had to have gas capability and this was the only quality machine that I didn't have to "add on" anything to accomplish this. Everything came with it except the bottle. Portability is a must for me, as many times I have to take the welder to the job rather than take the job to the welder, and this welder can go just about anywhere. It has more than enough power even though all it requires is a standard 115 volt recepticle, and have seldom ever had to use the full power setting to get good results. Using stainless wire and the tri-gas shroud, the bead is smooth and there is no slag or spatter. I have used flux-cored wire in it also with good results, even though slag and spatter were more of a problem, as were residual fumes. Overall, I would highly reccommend this welder to anyone who has a bit of welding to do from time to time.

2.0 out of 5 stars May do the job, but expect problems., November 30, 2002

This review is from: Hobart 500414 115-Volt, 135 Amp Handler 135 Welder (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is a good machine if you only need to weld a few times a year. As far as reliability, its a lot less than what you would get from a Lincoln or Miller of the same size. Hobart is a division of Miller and ITW. From the inside they are bare simple, but all the parts are extremly cheap. Expect problems. I's suggest purchasing a Lincoln or Miller since they're built with better parts for the money. After the warranty is out you want something thats built to last with few problems.
