i was looking for easy to use, inexpensive tig welder after taking a class to use for hobby work. So far it is working great, easy to use, no problems encountered. Can't say much about the weld quality, but that is the operator, not the equipment. When i actually do it right, the welds look very nice. i haven't tried aluminum yet, I've just been working on a welding table from mild steel. Then I'll start on some 4130 chromoly & Aluminum practice.
Recommended if you want an easy to use, inexpensive machine.

Got this machine this week, welding steel is an absolute dream. I also have a Hobart Handler 210 with the spool gun for aluminum but wanted to get away from the spatter and have nice clean welds. Aluminum so far has been a challenge. After a few days of practice and getting a different tungsten for the gun and smaller filler rod it has gotten better. After watching a few videos and reading some online forums I'm learning how to weld aluminum much better and I think this machine will be everything I was hoping it would be. Nice machine, but I wish the leads were detachable. Overall, love it!

This does everything I need, and it's a joy to operate. The controls make setup a breeze. It's also a very light unit, at least compared to my Hobart Handler 187, which weighs a ton. The actual TIG welding isn't easy, but this is true of any unit.

The only downside is that it only comes with a 3/32" collet and collet body. If you're using 1/16", 0.040", or 0.20" electrodes, you'll need to order these separately. But they're inexpensive.

Love this welder! Love it! Welds like a dream. I weld everything and I have 3 wire welders I use on a regular basis. If I were doing real heavy fabrication like 1/4 in or thicker on a regular I would recomend a heavier tig welder like a miller or lincoln with a better duty cycle but 1/8 in and 22 guage welds just beautiful and easy. Definetly recomend for hobiest or light industrial

My son and I are hobbyist welders. We had a Hobart Handler MIG welder, which was an incredible welder, especially since it needed only a standard 110v outlet. When we decided to move to TIG welding, in part because we had some aluminum projects in mind, this is the welder we looked at first. We looked pretty seriously at some less expensive (about $700-800) Chinese TIG welders, but were put off by pretty mixed reviews. We're very glad that we paid a bit more and got the EZ TIG. It does a great job on steel and aluminum (not perfect yet, but that's due to our inexperience rather than the welder). We've used it on steel and aluminum up to about 1/8th inch thick, and it has always worked well. I'd but this again without any hesitation.

I have quite a few years experience with MIG and Stick welding but upon getting this welder I was pretty new to TIG. I had just started a side job that has a Miller Dynasty 300DX, a super smooth machine, so I had that to compare this too.

Welding Aluminum is a little more tricky with the EZ TIG. It is quite doable but requires delicate control of the foot pedal to keep the weld puddle just right.

Welding mild and stainless steels (what I mostly do) is super easy. Get the dial to the top end of amps you need for the thickness of material you are working with and go for it. If the puddle gets to hot or huge just back it off with the pedal. The pedal has awesome control.

Hobart is a division of Miller so, to get collets and other expendables get them for a Miller and it will fit great.

I have welded super thin 1/16" stainless rod up to 1" steel plate/rod with this TIG. At full voltage it preforms just as well as it does at minimum voltage. I have yet to have the machine shut down due to going past it's duty cycle.

All in all, if you are new to TIG and want a good machine to learn on OR are not new to it but can't spend $4000-5000 on a sweet Dynasty or something of the like, you won't be disappointed with the EZ TIG.

It is a bare-bones, easy to use, well built, trouble free and portable welder.

I love it.

I have been for the last two years dealing with welding machines and very friendly to them,my tireless Amazon shopping ventures landed me to this wonderful friend,Hobart 500551 EZ tig 165i 230-volt welder. To my working areas I only worked with220 v and 110 volt machines. The new welder has a very unique single knob that enables me work perfectly because of its superior performance and only costs as low as $1349.99,I comfortably work on mild steel,4130 chromoly and aluminum hence giving very clean welds. However my machine came with 3\32'' collet so working on 1\16'',o.040'' and 0.20'' electrodes becomes a challenge and am supposed to buy these collets ,I enjoy working on steel and aluminum because its good on these metals.Since its purchase I have had no mechanical problem and to me it comes second from the longevity thing and leads the rest.I love my machine and its work is perfect.
