Great for a pair Steampunk goggles.,

This review is from: Hobart 770096 Welding Oxy-Acetylene Goggle - 50mm Eye Cup (Tools & Home Improvement)
These goggles work great for a pair of steampunk goggles. Now granted I spray painted them and glued some additional parts on it but the shape still lends itself very nicely to being modded for steampunk.
Here are two pics of the goggles after I got done with them :) http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/5057/p1030882r.jpg http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/2108/p1030883x.jpg

I bought these goggles and US Forge 108 Shaded #5 Economy Cup Brazing Goggles, figuring that one would be better than the other for a passive infrared goggle project. However, what I found was the US Forge goggles were identical in every way -- right down to the markings from the injection molding machine and the blue stripes in the elastic band. The only difference is that the Hobart goggles come with more packaging (a hard plastic box) while the US Forge goggles come in a sealed printed plastic bag.
As goggles go, they are perfectly usable although not overly comfortable. The eye-to-eye spacing is adjustable with a beaded chain (if you shorten it, cut the tails so you don't bonk yourself in the eye like I did).

I got these goggles on sale for about 7 or 8 bucks and they are completely worth it. I think everyone knows what goggles are so I'll outline what I think is different about these goggles than others.
First they are made of hard plastic all around. I've seen some that are made of like a flimsy rubber plastic and these are much more durable. Second, these goggles have a vent on the side of each eye piece that allow for ventilation and greatly reduce if not eliminate all together the goggles fogging up during use. Third, there are two sets of lenses. A set of thin clear plastic lenses over thicker glass lenses which provide the tinting for welding and cutting. If you are going to use these for general purpose shop work, then I suggest you manufacture your own clear lenses out of lexan or something similar, as the clear lenses it comes with won't protect your eyes from any sizable flying debris. Overall I'm very satisfied with them!

These goggles are very durable and adjustable - a good deal for the 10+- bucks.
For those who are unaware, there are two lenses per eye: a pretty green glass one with a clear plastic one on top. Unfortunately, one of the plastic lenses arrived scratched, but it's something I can live with. The lenses are easily removed because the plastic ring in the very front unscrews. For some reason, the image used gives this ring a sort of "octogonal" look...which isn't the case with the actual goggles. They are very round, which is what I was hoping for. The goggles are a bit larger than I would have expected, but I'm guessing this is normal for welding purposes. The plastic also digs into the skin around my nose a bit, and they aren't so comfortable resting on my forehead, so I'm going to add some thin rubber padding. I plan on using these for a costume/welding, so I really can't complain much due to the great price. These goggles are just begging to be customized with a fresh coat of paint, watch gears, and a new pair of lenses. Have fun!

I only use these as sunglasses. They are absolutely amazing! They're dark and comfortable; and also easy to disassemble. There are two different lenses on each side: One clear and one dark green.
I absolutely loves these!

These are good goggles but the clear lenses are made of cheap plastic. The dark lenses are made of glass. They don't fog up to bad like some goggles do. I find these to be quite comfortable but they leave marks on my face. These goggles are good but not perfect.

These are great goggles, the only two things I had problems with were fogging up (which happens with all goggles) and the center plastic tube connecting the two eye peices; the plastic sleeve over the metal bead string is somewhat thick. I removed it and put a piece of heat shrink tubing over it instead. If you don't have any defogging spray, you can put some toothpaste on the glass on the inside and buff it off to reduce fogging. Strange, but it works.
All in all great goggles, not extremely dark but definitely cuts down on the light significantly; I was using them for a costume.

These goggles came in great condition. Not only that but they work great too. Speedy shipping as well. The only critisizm I have is that they get a little uncomfortable after a while wearing them, but that is to be expected for welding goggles.

I am not a welder, but my occupation does require me to wear eye protection from heat and loose debris. I was looking for something less conservative than the usual safety goggles and this product is just what I wanted. Not only will I be able to wear them at work, but I can throw them on for costume parties and other outdoor activities where I might need eye protection from the sun.Product has an elastic head band that might break with little wear. The bridge band that joins the two eye coverings is adjustable via a beaded chain. I recommend taking your time and adjusting the bridge band for a comfortable fit. I wore it as it came and ended up with a bit of a headache due to excessive pressure on the bridge of my nose (bad idea). Each eye of the goggle assemblies has an adjustable valve for moisture ventilation which is very useful in preventing lenses from fogging when working and sweating. I was satisfied with this product, but in a practical capacity for which the product was designed: welding. I am unable to comment. |
