5.0 out of 5 stars Weekend Mechanic's Welding Helmet recommendation, July 13, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hobart 770424 XVS Series Welding Helmet Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
It has the most important features I wanted: meets the current ANSI spec, 1/12,000 sec speed and replacable AAA batteries. No graphics, just plain black, keeps the price down. It seems like a best value in a mid-range helmet. After a lot of searching on the internet, it seemed like a safe product for my purposes. I did want one that I could use for TIG welding but apparently these mid-range products aren't recommended for low-power TIG. However, I don't have a TIG machine yet and may not get one for several years, if ever.

After searching on the internet, it appears that some of the slower speed helmets can result in eye strain after a long session evidenced by a "gravely" feeling in the eyes. I used mine for several hours stitching up a 3 foot butt joint with tack welds; no indication of eye strain whatsoever. I still have 7 more feet to go. Couldn't face that many tack welds flipping a shade up and down. Those guys are right who say once you use an auto-darken helmet, you'll never go back. I'm completely satisfied with the purchase.Hobart 770424 XVS Series Welding Helmet Black

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Hood, March 21, 2011

This review is from: Hobart 770424 XVS Series Welding Helmet Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have had lots of experience with auto darkening hoods and was slightly nearvous to buy a cheep one. I had a cheap one before this one and it worked great but the battery died and no way to replace it. This one is easy to change and has more available setting than my last one. Hobart is a better known welding supplier brand so I gave this one a try. I had read one of the reviews on this hood saying that the head gear was cheap on the hood. I would disagree on this one. Where I have used this hood over 100 hours and have used many other hoods before I would say that the head gear beats all of my past hoods but. There is one brand of hood that has a better head gear that I know of and that hood for the cheapest model is over $200. Some cheap auto darkening hoods that I have used often had a spot on the lense that didn't darken all of the way which hurts the eyes, this hood wasn't that way abd has been great to work with. The only down side to this hood is the window size. For the most part if this is a problem, the next best window size on a hood that I would trust is $199. This hood is great for the money and would recomend this hood to anyone who doesnt want to spend a lot of money on a auto darkening hood.

Nice product --well put together-- which I would expect from a known brand like Hobart. The delivery was very good, and arrived in good condition. The helmet's setup and operation of the electronics is VERY easy to follow. I would recommend this product.

Took me 5 minutes to get it set. Welded for 2.5 hours straight. Worked good. IMO I'll take battery operated over solar all day long.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Helmet, January 17, 2012

So far, no problems. good timing adjustment. i wish it had a light or something to tell me when it is on though. I have thought it was on a couple of times and began welding only to find out i had turned it off instead of on. can you say flash burrrrrrrrn? otheer than that, it works well. good view and adjustable levels. had problems looking into the sun and grinding though.

I would buy again.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my best purchases, January 4, 2012

Since I crossed the 40 year mark it takes my eyes a little longer to focus, and trying to start a weld with a cheap standard helmet while wearing glasses was frustrating to say the least. This being my first auto darkening helmet, I read the reviews on several in this price range and decided on the Hobart. It is incredibly simple to use and is ready to go right out of the box. The padded headband is comfortable and the helmet is sturdy enough for the farm shop. It darkens plenty fast to prevent flashing. The hardest part of using it was breaking the habit of flipping the helmet up at the end of a weld. I like the fact that it uses standard AAA batteries that I can change myself. If you weld even once in a while I would definitely recommend this helmet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great helmet, November 13, 2011
This review is from: Hobart 770424 XVS Series Welding Helmet Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought this helmet because my old auto darkener was junk and I wanted to get something that would last me for a while and keep me from getting flashed all the time. This helmet works great. Turn it on, start welding, it turns itself off after while. Also nice is the sensitivity adjustment, which you can use if the helmet is flashing on/off in whatever lighting situation you are using. The headgear is comfortable and seems sturdy. It has several shades from 9-12, I usually MIG so I keep it on 10 or 11 and its fine. The instructions say you cannot TIG with it but its working fine for me with TIG on 16 gauge sheet. The shell seems a bit thin, but I guess this keeps the weight down. I like that it takes regular batteries so I don't have to charge it up or use a weird watch battery.
