4.0 out of 5 stars Em's Review, May 11, 2004

This review is from: The Hobbit (Adaptation) (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) (School & Library Binding)
I found the Hobbit to be a very well written book. It was about a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. I enjoyed the character of Bilbo very much, and I enjoyed hearing about his life inside his hobbit hole. JRR Tolkien did a very nice job of describing Bilbo, and I could see a clear picture in my mind of him. JRR Tolkien is also a very clever author. He has clever solutions to traps. For example, during Bilbo's adventure, he and the dwarves were captured in a dungeon. Believe it or not, they escaped by way of barrels in a roaring river. In the sequel, The Lord of the Rings, i did not feel the solutions were as clever. Back to The Hobbit. There were many creatures in this book, and i thought the author did a wonderful job creating them. They were each unique and had their own personalities, and they interacted that supported the ending of the story. There were also a few things i did not enjoy about this book. For example, sometimes Bilbo's split personality got confusing. It was hard to keep track of his character. Also, the book tends to get boring at times. It may depend of what genre of books you enjoy reading, but these books are not my type. However, if you enjoy a good adventure, this book is DEFINETALY for you. Some of you may read this book and not be into adventure stories, but change your mind because of his writing style. Overall I would give this book four out of five stars.
