Great Hand-Held Adventure for LOTR Fans, January 29, 2004
This review is from: The Hobbit (Video Game)
Are you a fan of the Lord of the Rings series? Then you definitely need to pick up The Hobbit, to learn how Bilbo found that magical ring. As you might expect, The Hobbit is set in Middle Earth and involves Bilbo the quiet, country hobbit getting dragged into an adventure by that meddling wizard, Gandalf. Before he realizes it, he's off to help a band of strange dwarves save their treasure from the cruel dragon Smaug. There's the usual mix of strange mindless quests and puzzles. You fetch medicine, carry messages, and give assistance. But it never gets tedious - you're always learning something new about your abilities and stretching your brain to figure out how to get through a puzzle. The game is nice in its pathway. You don't waste hours trying to roam the entire map figuring out what to do next. It's usually fairly obvious which WAY to go next, but it's up to you to figure out how to get there. For people who haven't read the hobbit, it's a good way to get a background on who Bilbo is, how the ring was found and what the world was like in the years before the Lord of the Rings series. The graphics are reasonably OK for a GBA - I did have to complain about the pink insides of the hobbit homes! But still you usually can figure out what everything on the screen is pretty easily. Not really a game with high replayability, but with Tolkein being so popular right now, you should find it easy to find some friends to trade it with when you're done!

Best of the handheld Tolkien's, December 8, 2003
This review is from: The Hobbit (Video Game)
Two Towers was a fun hack n slash, and the original LOTR game by Vivendi for the GBA left alot to be desired. However one thing it achieved possibly too well was the breadth of Tolkien's universe. This game manages to capture the essence of its wonderful source material, with all of the action and dialogue taken directly from the novel. Some of this can feel rushed particularly Gollum's first appearance, this is why I am taking a star off. Gameplay wise this is a terrific Zelda clone with all sorts of goodies, weapons and hidden areas. The game makes full use of the GBA and its buttons with a fair amount of the action relegated to the left shoulder button if you desire (weapons etc.) The save system is another reason I am giving this four stars (isolated save books), otherwise this is a great game that captures the flair of the writing which inspired it.

Great graphics, can use items like three different types of walking stick, the Ring, Sting, throwing rocks, firecrackers, and many more. Has lines straight out of the books. A good action, adventure, stealth game makes it an instant classic as fun as Return of the King for GBA.

A Wonderful GBA Game!, November 23, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Hobbit (Video Game)
The Hobbit is now the best GBA game I own. In my opinion it is even better than the Zelda games. This game is very addictive, as many people I know have said, and it is extremely fun to play! There is so many enemies to fight in this game. Battling goblins, giant spiders, and other monsterous-beings is just plain fun. The adventure and game-play The Hobbit has to offer is remarkable! I have nothing bad to say about this GBA game title. Buy it! It is worth the money.

quite a fun little game, November 15, 2003
This review is from: The Hobbit (Video Game)
The graphics and art design of the whole thing is very nice, especially for a GBA title. This game is simple but still very fun, and hard to put down. Game play is pretty straight forward, but there are still enough surprises to distinguish it from similar titles. It actually follows the story very well. This is a great game for younger kids!

A Good-Hearted Adventure..., January 21, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Hobbit (Video Game)
I first played this game through several friends of mine who owned it first. Now, I am a large LOTR fan, but not one of those junkie-hippie-nerdy types that do nothing else but read, watch, or play Tolkien. To me, this game wasn't a huge dissapointment. I don't play many RPGs that are as interesting as this one. And I must admit, a mission-based LOTRs game: C'mon, who woulda thought of that? True, the story isn't told well, but that factor is made up for in many ways. For example, I like how you get to know Bilbo through his actions in the game. For example, the script doesn't exactly reach out and tell you Bilbo isn't the outdoor-sy type. You learn that through the audio of his yelps, shouts, and whimpers. These eventually change into downright war cries. Stuff like that I deem interesting. I haven't played the XBOX version. But I can tell you now: I don't like all the people on this page dissing the game. It's not the novel (never will be) and it isn't anything more than GBA. Game Boy, folks. All kidding aside: this game is good. If you're not a Tolkien freak, I reccomend it.

The Resurrection of Classic RPG Gaming., August 5, 2004
A Kid's Review
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: The Hobbit (Video Game)
"THE HOBBIT" is what many refer to as a simplistic action/adventure game with many RPG elements, challenging bosses, unique sidequests, and a sufficient replayability value. I call it a rebirth of the classic RPG. I see all the signs: poor story-telling, with more time spent on graphics and action; quirky characters and attempted humor that often comes off as being childish or moronic; and sad dialogue that sounds like it was pulled from a children's book. Obsessive Tolkien fans might be dissapointed; RPG fans may not understand the full story, as little explanation to "whom or what" is given. This game straddles the fence of failures-- but I love it. Many people may love it. It's one of those things you either adore or abhor. It's as if the staff of Vivendi forgot that the game just might have a specific audience. Oh, well. At least give it a try. If you're a casual gamer (like myself), you might enjoy this game. Personally, I don't have enough time or money to sit around playing video games all day long, even if I am a home study student. But little Bilbo (the main character) does provide enough distraction in those tired, frustrated moments to consider renting or buying him. Personally, I'd rent it first, or wait until you see it on a bargain rack before I went out I spent a lot of money on it.
PLOT: Bilbo Baggins, the "hobbit" and title character, joins a troupe of dwarves on a mission to regain treaure from an evil dragon-- but many things go wrong.
