Editorial Reviews

Classic Story. Award-Winning Cast. Acclaimed Director.

All the ingredients for a warm-hearted family entertainment come together in this adaptation of HOBSON’S CHOICE- based on the classic play by Harold Bridgehouse.

Set against the backdrop of the French Quarter of 1914 New Orleans, the story follows the flamboyant and pompous Henry Horatio Hobson- played to perfection by Emmy® Winner* and Oscar® nominee** Jack Warden. Hobson loves the status quo almost as much as he loves his whiskey. While he carouses at the local tavern, his business is run by Maggie (Golden Globe winner*** Sharon Gless), the eldest and most spirited of his three unmarried daughters. Maggie is stung by her father’s belief that she’ll wind up an old maid and his refusal to give her a dowry. She goes about plotting a rebellion that will prove her father wrong in love and business.

In a rare TV appearance, screen legend Lillian Gish plays Maggie’s affluent ally. Yet another Emmy® Winner****, Richard Thomas, is featured as a simple shoemaker. Trivia Buffs will also appreciate an early performance by Robert Englund, now famous for playing Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street.

A charming romance that has been one of my favorites from the first time it aired on TV. Sharon Gless and Richard Thomas show that the basis for a relationship doesn't have to be fire and passion, but understanding of each others needs. This film will make you feel good for the times when life was a little less complicated.

I just finished watching this movie. Although it is not the most well-done movie (it IS from the 80s after all), I was hooked almost immediately. The action starts right at the beginning of the film with Maggie's outlandish idea. It is a study in characters to see the growth of Maggie from the dominant one to quietly supportive housewife and Will from the timid one to taking his lead as husband. The affection that grows between them is charming.

Liked this version much better than the original with Charles Laughton. Richard Thomas plays a very believable and likable character as the eager to please but definitely browbeaten shoemaker to the domineering daughter of the shopkeeper, played by Sharon Gless, who decides to take matters and the business into her own very capable hands. Its a delightful story that will have you applauding her resourcefulness and the transformation of Thomas as a shy, naive shoemaker to one who will eventually command the respect from the entire family.

My wife adores this movie, and I have been waiting for it to come to DVD for a long time. This was a made-for-TV movie, and all we had was a VHS tape lifted from HBO 25+ years ago. The production of the DVD is very good, and the price is fair.

I have loved this since the first time I saw it on TV many years ago and have been watching for a copy I could buy since then. Do not mistake this version for the earlier one (not starring Sharon Gless and Richard Thomas) which I did not like at all. If you are looking for a sophisticated drama, you could probably tear this movie apart, but if you are looking for one of the feel good movies that both Sharon Gless and Richard Thomas were famous for, this is definitely a keeper.

inferior recording. Sometimes freezes up or no sound or pixals. Then sometimes it works very well. Still like the movie though.

This is without a doubt one of my all-time favorite movies. It is well-written, well-acted by a great cast of talented actors. It's a movie that's family friendly with a clean and decent story plot. It's a made-for-TV remake of an old black-and-white movie (which I actually didn't like). This remake stars Sharon Gless and Richard Thomas, and they are spectacular. This is one of the few times that I've preferred an updated version of any movie, but I consider this one a vast improvement. Bottom line...Everyone that has watched it with me has agreed that it is a wonderful movie. I highly recommend this film!
