Practical design and performance solutions for every ad hoc wireless network

Ad Hoc Wireless Networks comprise mobile devices that use wireless transmission for communication. They can be set up anywhere and any time because they eliminate the complexities of infrastructure setup and central administration-and they have enormous commercial and military potential. Now, there's a book that addresses every major issue related to their design and performance. Ad Hoc Wireless Networks: Architectures and Protocols presents state-of-the-art techniques and solutions, and supports them with easy-to-understand examples. The book starts off with the fundamentals of wireless networking (wireless PANs, LANs, MANs, WANs, and wireless Internet) and goes on to address such current topics as Wi-Fi networks, optical wireless networks, and hybrid wireless architectures. Coverage includes:

  • Medium access control, routing, multicasting, and transport protocols
  • QoS provisioning, energy management, security, multihop pricing, and much more
  • In-depth discussion of wireless sensor networks and ultra wideband technology
  • More than 200 examples and end-of-chapter problems

Ad Hoc Wireless Networks is an invaluable resource for every network engineer, technical manager, and researcher designing or building ad hoc wireless networks.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book to read, October 25, 2004
By
This review is from: Ad Hoc Wireless Networks: Architectures and Protocols (Hardcover)
I needed a thorough introduction to Ad-Hoc Networks, and I discovered this great book. It is very well written and interesting to read. Moreover it covers fully the subject with great detail. I really enjoyed reading it.

I would suggest this book to those who would like to enjoy a telecom book and be welcomed to the Ad Hoc technology. The introduction can fit even those that are not aware of WLan technology or wired protocols.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, April 13, 2008
This review is from: Ad Hoc Wireless Networks: Architectures and Protocols (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book on ad hoc wireless networks. The first four chapters of the book gives the reader a good solid introduction to wireless LANs and cellular networks. Chapter 5 is a very good introduction to ad hoc wireless networks. It clearly explains and motivates the reader about ad hoc networks. The chapter on MAC layer protocols is well explained with different categories of MAC protocols neatly ordered. The best part of the book is the chapters on routing protocols (unicasting and multicasting). The chapters are so well organized such that they introduce the reader to different categories of routing protocols in ad hoc networks and briefly, but clearly explains the functioning of each protocol and also compares the advantages and disadvantages. The chapter on transport layer is also very good. The weakest chapter in the book is the chapter on secure routing. Though the authors explain some secure routing protocols, it would have been better if the authors had categorically explained them similar to the other chapters. Overall, it is an excellent book for novice as well as for a hard core researcher in mobile ad hoc networks.

This review is from: Ad Hoc Wireless Networks: Architectures and Protocols (Hardcover)
This book gives you an introduction to wireless networks and then goes into ad-hoc wireless networks. It defines the different problems you have with ad-hoc networks and proceeds to show you how to address those problems. Multiple protocols are shown at an introductory level but enough for you to know what's out there and do more in depth research later on. The writing in this book is very easy to understand.
