Great Intro to Hockey,
By A Customer
This review is from: Hockey Book for Girls, The (Books for Girls) (Hardcover)
Stacy Wilson has written a great introduction to hockey for girls of all ages. She reviews the basics including positioning, terminology and equipment needs. More importantly, she introduces the young reader to role models in women's hockey with profiles on past and current international stars. The book is laid out in a manner which makes it enjoyable for both kids and adults to read. I recommend this book for all young female athletes, but especially for those with an interest in hockey.

The description for this book suggests that it is for Grades 3-7. I think it may be too basic for the older grades. However, it's a very nice introduction to the game of ice hockey for young girls who want to learn more about the sport. I purchased this book for my six year old daughter, who is just beginning to play. She loves the big colorful photographs, and the profiles of successful women players. She also enjoys copying the stretching exercises and puck handling drills that are clearly outlined. I appreciated the section on selecting and fitting hockey equipment for a young girl, as when I played I was neither young nor a girl.More than anything, this book is great for young girls who love the game, but who also need occasional reassurance that ice hockey isn't just a boy's game. If it can be made better, it would be nice to have it updated to profile some more recent players (this book was published in 2000, and profiles players from the late 1990s, when women's hockey on the international level was just getting started). It would also be nice if it discussed more about why hockey is a great sport for girls to play in the first place. But these are relatively small quibbles for a book that ably fulfills a genuine need. |
