The new edition has added all 2003-04 mainstream and regional sets. Unlike monthly price guides, the annual Hockey Cards book lists and prices every hockey card in a checklist, not just the key cards. It even includes individual pricing on parallels.
Hockey Cards 14th edition has nine chapters: the Vintage era (1879-1943), the Original Six era (1943-1968), the O-Pee-Chee Years (1968-1988), the Boom Years (1990-1997), the Modern Years (1997-2003), NHL & WHA team sets, Minor League team sets, Junior team sets, and the Index of Players.
Special to the 14th edition is a revamped Boom Years chapter. Many previously unlisted cards have been added to these pages. Canadian Sports Collector has also added the individual prices to sets like Pro Set and Score and has added Master Set prices to all key brands in this era.
The team-issued sections also include individual card-by-card prices for the first time in a number of editions.
Every chapter includes new checklists of previously unlisted sets. Some of those sets include the J.D. McCarthy postcards and the 2000-01 Upper Deck NHLPA cards. Two other notable changes are the adjusted years on the 1967-68 Topps Test series (previously catalogued as 1966-67 Topps Test) and the 1971-72 through 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee team crests (previously catalogued as 1972-73 and 1973-74).
Also new to the 14th edition are unique check-box shapes in the checklists. While most lines will carry the regular square box (¡), items limited to 500 copies or less will have a triangular-shaped box (£) and rare items limited to 100 copies or less will have a diamond-shaped check-box (♦).
At last, another exciting change shows up in the Index of Players. This year, skaters and goaltenders have been separated in the Index of Players. All NHL goaltenders (active and retired) and significant international, minor and junior goaltenders have been listed in a separate goalies sub-chapter. This should be a tremendous plus to goalie-specific collectors. This split of skaters and goaltenders is similar to the split found in annual hockey guides and registers.
