Book Description

January 30, 2003 8 and up3 and upHockey the NHL Way
Hey kids--if you could choose a hockey coach, you'd choose one of the NHL greats, wouldn't you? Guess what: now the hottest heroes on the ice are coming to your rink, in a fully illustrated official NHL volume chock-full of their inside tips. What does Dominik Hasek think about going into a big game? How does Saku Koivu shake off checkers? What does Ray Bourque do to stay in shape? You'll get the answers to those questions and many others, all accompanied with full- color photos of the players in action. Broken down into themed sections, this book's words of wisdom come from legendary coaches Scott Bowman and Pat Quinn, while players like Jaromir Jagr, Paul Kariya, Teemu Selanne, and the fabulous Mark Messier provide the inside track on topics such as scoring goals, being consistent, staying focused, and leading by example. There's no better, more inspiring one-stop reference for budding superstars.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 4-6. Each chapter of this book covers either a skill or a character trait that creates a successful hockey player. Included are such basic concepts as speed, agility, teamwork, and consistency. The chapters consist mostly of a dozen or so short quotes from professional players and coaches. Some of the quotes deal with specific advice about parts of the game; most are of the sports cliche variety. Intermixed with the text are plenty of full-color, clear, action-packed photographs that may be the most appealing aspect of the book for young hockey fans. Readers who know the game may desire a little more meat along with the large heapings of inspiration. Others, probably those who as adults will enjoy hearing motivational speakers, can lace up their skates will new determination. Todd Morning
