They edited a movie I use to love,

I can't believe how much they cut from this movie. The took out the drinking, they took out some funny line all to make this movie a learning lesson for some family movie company. There was nothing really bad about the parts they took out. Why mess with something that was more real than what they left in. I was disappointed with the edited version. Childhood Favorite!!!,

Disney used to play this movie on their Sunday night specials and I became addicted! It was a girl power movie long before hollywood caught on. BUY IT, after all... I haven't found one place in 10 years that you can rent it.

VERY DISSAPPOINTED,
This review is from: Hockey Night [VHS] (VHS Tape)
THE ORIGINAL HOCKEY NIGHT IS A GREAT MOVIE. UPON WATCHING THE NEW DVD THAT I JUST PURCHASED I WAS UPSET TO DISCOVER THAT HALF THE MOVIE WAS GONE. THEY SHOULD HAVE MADE IT A POINT AND STATED THAT THE MOVIE WAS EDITED. IT WAS CERTAINLY A WASTE OF $18.

Hockey Night Disappointment,

Hockey Night is a wonderful movie. My husband and I taped it during the 80's and played it so much that the tape finally gave out. We were very excited that there was a DVD version of the movie until we purchased it and found out that the movie had been dramatically edited. It was not advertised nor labeled as an edited version and the portions of the movie that were removed were poorly edited and done so with no taste. When originally aired this was an after school "family" PG 13 movie made in Canada. The unedited version of the movie was a true to life uplifting story. The edited version removes reference to actual reality and what life is all about. We would like our money back since this movie is falsely advertised. If Family TV company who creates these DVD's owns rights to this movie and others then they should make an "unedited" version available.

I remember watching this movie as a teenager two decades ago and loving it, but could not recall exact scenes or lines. Recently, after reading the Amazon customer reviews about the difference between the original VHS movie and the edited "Feature Films for Families" DVD, I actually bought them both to compare. I must say I agree with the people who were aghast at how much of the original had been cut out. I was particularly astonished to see that parts that were completely "family appropriate" - such as Kathy's exchange about hockey with her mother's date at the dinner table - were snipped. WHY? It made Kathy's darting from the table seem like a complete and confusing overreaction.
I can understand if "Feature Films for Families" wanted to remove the "herpes" comment and the scene involving underage drinking. But they tinkered all over the place. How does a film company obtain permission to (essentially) kidnap a movie and butcher it like this??

How could they butcher such a tame and great TV movie? I'm so pissed off! Going to have to get my old ex-rental VHS back off my friend now, cause this dvd was a complete waste of money and time! I just hope some better, more legit company releases the full version soon!

Was a wonderful movie before it was all chopped up for this DVD,

I remember watching this when it came out. It was such a great movie. Don't buy this DVD. All the humor was taken out and it was left boring and disjointed. Most of the really cute parts are completely gone! Not worth the money. I hope they put the original version out on DVD someday. It really was a great story.

Hockey Night,

I have loved this movie since the first time I saw it in the 80's. I recently bought the DVD and was disappointed to discover that they had edited the movie. This movie is about as tame as it gets so I'm not sure why they felt it necessary to do this. The parts they took out made the movie seem a bit choppy. There is not a notation stating that this movie is edited on any of the current listings or on the DVD itself - so beware. It seems as though this should be a requirement. If you want to view this movie in it's entirety, then you should purchase the VHS which is not edited.

loved this film when i was younger and tried to rent it to show my child. found it here , on dvd, at a great price. i guess i was excited to finally find the movie (along with other childhood movies found here and bought that were only available on vhs) i didn't read the reviews because i never thought a movie would be editted and not mentioned. i noticed the cut parts and wished they were left in. my child, never seeing it before, enjoyed the movie regardless.
the cut parts were....the boys on the team heavy breathing as cathy got dressed for try-outs, one of the boys on the team making a comment about herpes during mr. lumber's speech about winning being something no one can take away from you (something like that), cathy calling her mom's date at the dinner table 'shifty nelson', cathy and her friend drinking before throwing rocks at spear's window, and spear's dad ripping off a towel from his head in the dressing room. pretty tame for any movie nowaday. oh well....

Fantastic Movie! Ahead of its time, corniness asside...,

I stumbled across this movie and never imagined before I popped it in the VCR what I was missing.
There is an extreme amount of corny-ness in this movie, but it was way ahead of its time. I'd love to see this concept remade for the new millenium by anyone but Disney who would just Mighty Duck it into the ground. Wonderful storyline! I wish I had it on DVD! |
