5.0 out of 5 stars Really cool! Very rad! Awesome!, July 5, 2009

I love stories about awkward teens, finding comfort in punk rock, and the victory of the underdog! This story is really entertaining and such a great concept! As soon as I started reading it I didn't stop 'till I was done. Front to back page this book jumps into a world of its own.

For anyone's who has ever felt like the odd man out or like maybe you just don't quite fit in, you'll definitely enjoy this inspiring book. Mine also had a free guitar pick!

Lenny and his mother move to Ohio, much to Lenny's dislike of leaving his friends behind and starting eighth grade in a new school. Because he is out of contact lenses and needs new ones immediately, his mother is unable to go with him, so he must go to the eye doctor by himself.

The doctor fits him with a special pair of contacts that gives him bizarre sights of the other kids in school, along with most of the teachers. Lenny soon meets Pauline, a girl at the school who everyone thinks is autistic, and he finds out why he was given the special contact lenses.

Stephen Hines is a fantastic writer with the ability to understand issues of young adults. He takes the reader into the mind and emotions of the characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty, fun and just plain weird...I like it!, September 25, 2009
This review is from: Hocus Focus (Kindle Edition)
Lenny has to start over, new town, new friends, new eye contacts, the latter being his biggest problem.

Lenny and his mother move to Ohio for a fresh start and Lenny needs to get new eye contacts before schoo...l starts. Dr. Third, the local eye doctor, hooks Lenny up with some "very special" new lenses. Only Lenny doesn't find out just how special until his first day at school, where he finds out that the kids and teachers at his new school are not your normal high school attendants.

Witty, fun and just plain weird, Hocus Focus is a book that any teen reader and adult will enjoy, especially if they like punk rock and skating (not necessary though). Stephen Hines knows how to hold your attention even after you're done reading the book. I still chuckle at some of the things Lenny sees with his contacts, because I can relate to my own school days. Hocus Focus a story about coming of age, falling in love and rocking your way to adulthood, with more than a few twists along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent YA read, July 11, 2009
This review is from: Hocus Focus (Kindle Edition)
Tween and teen readers will be dawn in to this story that focuses on Lenny as he struggles to find his way in a new school in a new town. Snobs, detentions, a band competition, friendships, a girl of interest all mixed with Lenny's troubled past and his effort to find his place.

The added twist is the contact lenses Lenny gets from a local eye doctor, causing him to see weird images of teachers and classmates. Without giving too much away, it's what drives Lenny to understand his place and be a stronger young man than he ever thought he could be--all this as time is running out.

A fun, unique read that shouldn't be missed.
