I'm really, really pleased with this bread machine mix. First of all, it's really easy to make: just put it in the bread machine with water, oil and yeast. The yeast packet is included, so that's nice. It bakes up with a really nice texture and tastes great. It's great for making sandwiches and it's healthy! I will definitely be buying this again!

This is great bread mix. I put it in my bread maker and it comes out delicious every time. I've found that using real butter helps it rise higher than margarine or oil. I've added different ingredients to make different types of bread. We especially like adding flax seed, rosemary, oregano and minced onion. Bread is a little pricey but so worth it. Fresh & no preservatives.

I bought this product only because others said it was good. I was surprised how well it worked as an oven bread. I also had trouble with the rise as did many reviewers, but by adding some of my own yeast and proofing it in a 150 degree oven for double the time created a really nice not-too-dense bread that baked up beautifully. I baked mine in the oven and made them into rolls instead of a loaf.
Another note: I added to my last batch 1/2 cup each chopped nuts and diced dates for a more mediteranean flavor. After the first rise when you punch it down just put the add-ins and knead a few times to incorporate, then mold it how you like (loaf or rolls) and let rise another hour to 1 1/4 hours and bake as directed (shorter time for individual rolls) and enjoy.

Great bread mix, but may need eggs,

The first batch I made was strictly according to the directions, and although came out tasty, it was very dense, chewy, and hard to slice. In subsequent batches, I tried adding a couple eggs to the recipe and that seemed to do the trick - came out much better...fluffy and easy to slice. I highly recommend this mix, but you may need to add eggs.

Love these bread mixes; I use them for all my bread in my breadmaker. I like to add tons of extra ingredients for even more fiber: seeds, quinoa, oats, wheat germ, bran, walnuts. This makes a small, more dense loaf (don't add more than about 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup of extras).

A box of Hodgson MIll bread mix and a bread machine makes a greatloaf of bread. The recipe is easy, and it has never failed. I do add a teaspoon of sugar and an extra dash of salt for my taste. You just can't go wrong.

Our first two boxes got over baked because we left it in the full time.
The other are turning out great because I take them out 35min early. Your time may vary. The only thing you need to add is vegetable oil or margarine. We've used both and it turned out the same. I would suggest using olive oil or another vegetable oil because it is easier to use.

Whole Wheat Bread Mix,
This review is from: Hodgson Mill Honey Whole Wheat Bread Mix, 16-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 6) (Grocery)
The Hodgson Mill Honey Whole Wheat Bread Mix is a excellent product. In fact most of the Hodgson Mill "whole grain" products are very good. It is hard to find healthy "whole grain" products locally and I ma glad that I can order them from Amazon and receive the shipments on a timely basis.
The product from Amazon is a little more expensive than when I have found the product in a local store but I keep in mind that it includes "free shipping." I like the idea of buying and using products that I can make fresh that contain no preservatives and other "add-in" chemicals that you find in off the shelf products.

This particular Hodgson Mill mix is very different in texture than the white loaf. It makes a more dense bread, that actually slices a lot easier. Since I don't have butter on hand normally, I have been using a vegetable oil, and it tastes nice. I suspect the butter will add an even nicer taste.
I like my crust soft, so I not only set the machine on light crust, I lightly spray the crust with "butter flavored" oil after it comes out of the pan so that it remains soft. I added cranberries to one batch, and raisins to another. I then sliced the bread and spread it with my low-cal margarine, then sprinkling it cinnamon and sugar. It was ideal. Since I eat the whole loaf myself, I can't smell it as I wake up each morning, but I can toast it to bring out the freshness. I love this bread a lot better than the Krusteaz I can get at the grocery store, and by ordering it as a subscription through Amazon, it actually comes out very low cost. Healthy bread, Good taste, great price, delivered right to my door. I do love this one a lot! (Just a quick note - if you have trouble with your raisins clumping around the outside of the bread, be sure to "coat" them with flour ahead of time. I didn't have a problem with the cranberries, but my "sticky" raisins required a bit of extra attention.) |
