4.0 out of 5 stars Quite Nice October 25, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Enjoyable listen. Stefan Schilli has a sweet, beautiful oboe sound. Very well-recorded. I believe this is the only album to feature Hofmann's oboe pieces. Very similar in style to Mozart.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Oboe -- Uneven Recording July 20, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
One of the most popular composers of concertos in the mid-eighteenth century, Leopold Hofmann (1738-1793) likely wrote most of the 60 some works on commission. Born in Vienna as the son of a well-educated civil servant, he wrote for wide range of instruments, including 6 surviving ones for the oboe. Four of them are recorded here.

A regal ‘Allegro Maestoso’ opens the Concerto in C Major, with horns supplying counterpoint for the orchestral intro. Dexterity in the passage work and adroit use of the penetrating tonal quality of the wind instrument characterize this 1st movement’s solo work, and can applied to all of Hofmann’s oboe compositions. But it is in the adagios where Hofmann’s writing, and Stefan Schilli’s oboe really shine.

Especially in the cadenzas, subtle nuances and delicate coloration emerge. Also noteworthy is the way Hofmann uses the orchestra, not a mere accompaniment, but to interject musical ideas for the oboe to comment upon and develop. The 2nd movement ‘Adagio’ is a perfect example. In the closing ‘Allegro non molto’, the horns return to lend sufficient punch to drive this finale without overwhelming the solo wind instrument.

The next 2 works are double concertos with the unusual pairing of a harpsichord with the oboe. Horns announce the beginning of the ‘Spiritoso’ of the Double Concerto in F Major. While the piercing tone of the wind instrument can penetrate an orchestral passage, the fragile sound of the harpsichord is more easily obscured. Higher volume on the keyboard track would have helped. Compounding the problem is the engineering, which sounds as if the horns were recorded in another room at the end of a long hallway. Given the extensive use Hofmann makes of the horns, this is a challenge.

Unfortunately I travel quite a lot for my job, and so I have a HDX with movies, books and music loaded that goes with me everywhere. This is the latest addition to the music collection. Marvellous music that lulls me to sleep on the plane.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice music--poor sound balance September 28, 2010

Hoffman's oboe and oboe/harpsichord concertos are lively pieces, very pleasant to listen to and are competently performed. I would give this disk four stars except for one thing. The sound balance on the oboe/harpsichord concertos is poor. One can barely hear the harpsichord; it is overwhelmed by the oboe.
