5.0 out of 5 stars The bass is beautiful and blue, October 21, 2003

This review is from: Hofner Blue Notes (Audio CD)
I don't know much about Chris Rea but I saw his Jazzee Blue label (Jazzeeblue.com) advert in MOJO and was curious to get this recording.
It's not a bass solo album. Tasteful grand piano and drumkit are the support and the Hofner bass is the featured (lead) instrument, the bass is doubled (overdubbed) on most tracks.
The album clocks in at over 70 minutes via 12 songs of unrushed, slightly smokey backroom blue jazz. The music is neither contemporary yuppie jazz, nor is it blowhard be-bop. The music's atmosphere hovers in a natural, unpretentious, unobtrusive air. Most songs are played in a slow flowing tempo. The songs never deviate outside this feel, the album is a cohesive piece and portrait.
Favorite tracks? #7 Detroit! and the album's beautiful closer #12 Kestral Avenue! both come to mind but again every song flows naturaly. I put it in the cd player, hit play and let it go.
I find Hofner Blue Notes unqiue and somehow different from any other recording I've heard or own, no easy feat!
And the Hofner bass itself sounds woody, warm, round and musical, simply gorgeous.
Hofner Blue Notes is a seductive work of candid blue emotion and musicality. Wonderful.

What can I say about Chris Rea? I have followed this artist for almost 15 years now. He is one artist who just knows how to produce the most soulful Blues-Jazz music.

This album is no different. I bought this CD through this store and love it. I have never heard some one play this beautiful on Hofner Bass. Also, highly recommended, 'Dancing Down The Stony Road', 'Blue Jukebox', and 'Blue Street(Five Guitars)'.

Keep it coming Chris..
