RAPID FIRE POWER POPPER by Hog Wild with 12 pack Refill

My 3 sons received these guns as a gift about a year ago. (Ages 9, 7 and 6). They are such fun!! The kids love them and they are safe for indoor use. I think they are tons of fun too but rarely get the chance to play with them because the boys monopolize them. Every friend that comes over...

I think they are tons of fun too but rarely get the chance to play with them because the boys monopolize them. Every friend that comes over immediately grabs them for playing. We had the marshmellow guns, but they didn't work nearly as well. The balls do wander off only to be found weeks later in strange places... so buy a refill pack!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent play value, August 31, 2009
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
We bought two of these last Christmas and have just ordered another one for a friend's birthday. My kids LOVE these poppers! We've ordered replacement balls too because they do tend to wander. We were happily surprised to find the replacement balls also come with a mesh sack to store the balls in allowing the kids to carry their "ammo" around with them while playing. These balls are soft and don't hurt or break things if the kids are playing in the house. We've bought so many other "bad" products over the years for our kids. This one is an A++!!

Gun is fun to shoot, my sons enjoy playing war games and is safe to use because the soft balls does not hurt when they hit you. Safe for young childer.

This review is from: Hog Wild Double Barrel Power Popper (Toy)
Friends of mine have the single barrel version of this, and they are great fun. So I decided to order some for my kids (and me!). Just got them today in the mail.

The double barrel version was supposed to be even more fun, but it has a spring in it (ostensibly to aid in compression, which is what fires the ball) that the single barrel version doesn't. Problem is, for my kids (ages 6 and 8) the spring makes it too hard to stretch (and subsequently compress to fire)-- and even when my older periodically does get a shot off, it is wildly inaccurate because of all the effort. We unloaded/unstoppered one of the barrels, which helps reduce the resistance on compression, but it is still not enough-- it really is the spring.

My kids are terribly disappointed right now, and I am contemplating opening one of the things up to disconnect the spring and see if that totally destroys the toy or not. I may just order the single barrel version for them, and keep the double barrel for when they are older/bigger/stronger. I can fire the thing reasonably well, but once in a while the balls don't pop out reliably. We are also stretching the rubber valves just a bit, to see if that makes it a little easier to fire (with the understanding that that may reduce velocity on the ball). I'm not sure how much better the toys will get with some use, or if the toy will break before the balls squish down a little or the valves loosen to make it easier to shoot. At this rate, the toys will not get much use, anyway.

Basically, these toys are what is advertised. With me shooting, the double barrels do not fire every time-- the top barrel more often in a roughly 3:2 ratio. Effective range is twenty feet AT MOST-- more like 15 for any real melee. You can barely feel the impact at over 6-8 feet, so they are pretty safe over age three (swallow hazard). Educational value with respect to not shooting at the eyes, and making sure they understand the difference between these obvious toys and real projectile weapons like guns.

My kids are on the small side for their age, but this is probably a version for a pretty strong kid at age 8, and perhaps better for a kid somewhat older.

I am seven. I think that it fires well. It acts like a real gun. When I fire it the balls fly a long distance. If you choose this one, good choice.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could be fun for older kids and adults, January 5, 2012

We bought 2 of these for our 4 year old for Christmas. Although he can usually fire off a few shots, it is quite a work out, and he can't shoot accurately because it requires so much work to pump. The balls are about 1" in diameter so they are not safe for kids that put things in there mouth. One of the guns broke within 5 minutes of opening it, so there seems to be quality control problems.

Bought one of these for my son and he enjoyed it so much I came back and bought one for everyone in the family! Now on those indoor days we can have our "wars" and get out lots of pent up energy. The kids take a little practice to get used to firing them (they can be a bit finicky to shoot) but once they've got it there is lots of fun to be had. No worries about hurting anyone or anything.

4.0 out of 5 stars really fun, but hard to pump for young kids, January 19, 2011
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this toy for my son(5) and daughter(7), and they are not strong enough to pump the gun to get the balls to come out. It's a fun toy so we'll keep it around till they get bigger, but I wouldn't recommend it for younger kids due to the strength needed to operate.

I bought a third one with a 2nd refill pack just for added fun for a third player....like me (mom)! We dont care that the ball doesnt reach 20 feet away..... we play inside, where your only 6 to 12 feet away from eachother anyway! The kids had a "ball" playing with these guns right away, leaving other christmas gifts aside for a long while. I done good!!
