5.0 out of 5 stars Great starter plane.
First of all let me say this: To all the other reviewers that stated "the plane will not fly" ..it is all a matter of preperation. Being an RC pilot for a few years now, I had a pretty good idea of how this little toy was going to react. Out of the box, in about a 7mph wind (WAY to much wind for a beginner) my plane would not stay airborn. A few rudder adjustments...

i have two of these things cause they were really cheap from somewhere, and no, one of the colors is not better than the other because they both blow. i have many air hogs and am sad to say, thisn's the worst. i admire spin master in their attempts at creating an RC plane that any kid can fly in their yard, but I draw the line when it comes to the defender(the wingspan is seriously maybe 10 inches) this tinyness really actually kills the toy straight from the getgo. it's smallness means that it must have both a small battery and really small motors. in short, it has no power to pull it through the air, weighs too much for the size, and Bricks may just be more fun to fly. There is however one positive. It teachs you about gravity and its devastating effect on this poor little foam plane. if there is even the slightest breeze, this plane will stall and nose dive and that's only if it even stays in the air long enough. and now i notice that the skywinder is only $30!! now there is a much better plane for your money. Now assuming that anyone will actually read this among the 50 or so reviews for the not quite flying brick, read my review on the Skywinder or the Rush, they are actually flyable!!

I bought a Defender at (...). It rocked for about ten minutes, then it wouldn't charge. So I got new batteries...Nothing. I exchanged it for a blue Defender, it worked for about three hours than the up button on the controller stopped working. So I exchanged it... Again. It worked for a couple of hours and stopped charging. I got new batteries again, and still, nothing. I turned out 0 for 3. If you want to go return a plane twice a day, I reccomend this, otherwise, get the Resistor for $14 more. Thats what I did, and the Resistor worked.

Overall the plane seems like a good idea, however the durability of the plane is very poor. We have owned two and a neighbor owned one. In all cases the planes broke within the first few flights. Very poor choice for a gift.

A few rudder adjustments later (as stated in the manual) we were off. The plane soared nicely, respinding to throttle control as expected. To the reviewer that complained about no "instant control response" this is very normal in planes of this size. Being the flaps are very small, and there are no aelerons, response time will be lagged. You must always plan your flight ahead of time. This is why i strongly urge anyone flying this plane to fly in a LARGE open field, with no trees, no hard surafaces (cement, hard dirt.. etc), and no telephone wires. Most importantly, make sure there is no wind. It may take some doing to find such a place, but it will be well worth it. The plane will break if crashed into cement, as will every rc plane you will come across. After about 2 hours flying over grass, we decided to test its durability into hard pavement. On the second nose-dive into the street, the left motor began to malfunction, tho this was almost expected.

Overall, i consider this an excellent plane to learn on. Just make sure you read all the instructions and fly in an appropriaste area. If you cannot get this plane to fly, you WILL NOT be able to fly a better plane. Flying is nowhere near as easy as many seem to think.

4.0 out of 5 stars Value and fun in one toy, May 11, 2005

This toy was a great buy for my nephew. We wanted something affordable and fun with decent play. The first thing we did was pull it out of the box and attempt to fly it. Well the results were obvious, it didn't fly as well until I read the actual instruction sheets. After understanding how to work the plane, my nephew loved flying it. The all in one charger is great, its portable and convenient to put away. Great deal!

We were able to get the plane flying and had a great time, no problems - RTFM and be sure to charge it for at least 4-minutes before the first flight. It was a blast and has lasted several hard beatings in to the pavement. Unfortunately, it isn't water proof and it stopped working after an "accidental" encounter with a kiddie pool.

My boys had played with, and loved, this toy when other friends had owned it. So I thought it was a sure bet when I purchased one for a birthday and one for another son for Christmas. I was shocked to learn that you are not supposed to use this toy in weather that is under 45 degrees. Well if you live on the east coast, that kind of ruins the idea of giving this toy as a Christmas gift!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Present Ever!!!, August 22, 2005
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Air Hogs Defender Remote Control Plane - Blue (Toy)
I bought this for my son on his sixth birthday, and it made the party! It flies great, bounces off of the ground and is virtually indestructable, and keeps on going and going. My son had no trouble at all flying it, and some younger kids (three years old) were also able to get some good flights out of it. It was so great that we went back to the store and bought two other planes, which were also awesome. I think most of the complaints of others can be avoided if you fly this in a school field or other big field. It's not a backyard toy, unless you have several acres. It's an awesome toy that our kids love, and now daddy is going to buy one for himself. And the other great thing about it is that it's so cheap. If it breaks or gets stuck on top of the school roof (as ours did one time), you can either climb up there and get it (as we did), or just go buy another one. No tears, just get a brand spanking new plane. Don't fly in heavy wind, and don't fly unless you're in a big field, and have some rudimentary knowledge of how to work a joystick, and this is a great toy and a great value.

I bought one of these at wal mart. It was fun while it lasted. Unfortunately, it lasted about an hour. I went through 5 or 6 of these, with none lasting more than 3 days. So I bought a resistor, which gave me similar results. If you want a REAL PLANE, go buy from a model/hobby shop. Not this CRUDDY Airhogs toy
