3.0 out of 5 stars Great on the Ground, Not easy to fly, especially for beginners, but it does fly, February 28, 2007
This review is from: Air Hogs Storm Launcher 27.045 MHz yellow (Toy)
Some words of advice for what they're worth.
I am an accomplished model aircraft pilot with 23 years of experience and to be honest...even without modifications...the Storm Launcher flies better than I thought it would for a toy that is only about $100 with a Lithium Polymer battery and comes ready to go right out of the box. The battery and charger setup is very reasonably priced and "acceptable" for a toy, but you'll want more than one battery if you intend to have much fun and actually spend time practicing on flight skills.
It is quite impressive on the ground...relatively fast and turns on a dime, but of course the ads show it flying and everyone thinks they're just going to pick it up and go fly it. I imagine just about anyone will be able to get it to jump a few feet into the air and then maybe come back down without doing any real damage, but if you really intend to fly it like a model aircraft, it is not an easy task.

1) Take the time to "break in" the motors as described in the instructions. I know you'll want to play with it as soon as you open the box, but the more power you have when flying, the easier it will be and proper "break in" will make a difference. I ran 3 fully charged packs through it while facing a wall and blocked the throttle at about 1/3 with short bursts to full throttle every couple of minutes.

2) It is very light...so flying in anything above a very gentle breeze is a wild ride...I've flown it in 15+ mph winds and most of the time it was flying like a kite or being violently blown backwards until I could get it back on the ground.

3) Mine was initially quite a bit out of balance (tail heavy) and would tend to raise the nose very high while flying unless I would force it back down with about half of my available elevator in "pro" mode. I taped a nickel to the bottom of the nose at the very front under the center and it handles a little better with the added nose weight (it could probably still use a little more).

4) This one is IMPORTANT. If you do manage to get it up in the air...say about 50 feet high or so...be very careful that you keep PLENTY of power to the motors when coming back down. This thing is flying on power and NOT aerodynamics. I initially tried to set up a landing approach like a typical model airplane and backed off of the throttle almost all the way to begin the descent. DO NOT do that! This model does not glide well at all and NEEDS the motors running with quite a bit of throttle to stay airborne. From about 100 feet high, mine dove straight for the ground when I backed off of the throttle. I immediately went back to full throttle and full up elevator (full forward left stick and full back on the right stick) and it barely pulled up about 5 feet above the ground. If I had been much lower when I reduced the throttle, it would have been SEVERELY damaged. When you want to come back down, gradually back off to about 3/4 throttle and be ready to go back to full throttle when it gets about 10 feet high. If you don't time it right (and it would take some practice if you're not an experienced pilot) you will be in need of some polyurethane glue and some patience.

5) Turning is actually pretty reasonable considering it only uses directional thrust on the motors, It works great on the ground, but you have to stay ahead of it somewhat to keep it going where you want it in the air. I would definitely find a big open field for initial flights. Again, stay on the throttle during turns...it will sink quite a bit when you enter a turn, but it is manageable if you add more up elevator (pull back on the right stick as you're turning). If you've never flown a model plane before, the hardest part is that the controls are reversed when the model is flying toward you (steering to the left on the controls moves the model to your right and vice versa). There is nothing but practice that will develop that skill and it is one of the main reasons a new model is crashed by someone who is new to model aviation.

6) If you do break it (They're surprisingly tough for surviving minor abuse, but I finally cart-wheeled one landing on about the 30th flight bad enough to break the horizontal fin at the back). Super glue does not work well on foam. You'll need a good polyurethane glue like ProBond or Gorilla glue and let it dry overnight to make a strong repair.

In summary...it's not a bad item, but I think the ads are a little misleading for the average kid who's eyes will light up when they see it online or in the toy department. I bought 2 of them and 3 batteries and have actually had quite a bit of fun entertaining people at the flying field with my inexpensive "flying boats". I set up one of my battery chargers so I could recharge the batteries from my truck, but you start adding cost if you want to really get into model aviation. Best of luck and Happy flying.

5.0 out of 5 stars awsome toy, April 4, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Air Hogs Storm Launcher 27.045 MHz yellow (Toy)
first of all, it's not a toy, it's a hobby plane and i agree with the people who say it's not for 10 year olds. every one who wrote a bad review was either too impatient to fly it and didn't read the instructions which say it is a pro level plane and to fly it, you need to read the instructions or you'l regret it or they're just not good pilots. my experience with the storm launcher was excelent. you need to drive it on the ground the first 8- 10 times so the motors can get used to it. then, before flying, you need to do some small jumps for practice. before you know it, you can fly it for almost 6 minutes and do loops.

Geeze what do you expect? Yes it's a $100 toy and being capable of flight means it's going to be light and delicate.

But make no mistake: It is an amazing toy - flat out impossible when I was young.

So have a care, realize what you're buying and have fun.
